the difference between paxil and paxil cr

Posted by shadowmon on August 24, 2004, at 6:38:19

What is the difference between paxil and paxil cr. My dr is trying me on paxil cr.

I am taking paxil 60 mg, and will switch over to paxil cr 50 mg. is there any difference between the two?

Hello, the only difference my pdoc told me, was that the Control-Released Paxil, gives you more of a anti-anxiety effect for the whole day. But, she also wanted me on xanax xr and I didnt like that! It was also suppose to keep me anxiety free all day, but it made me too sleepy.
All the best,
S

Sure is a difference. The "CR" stands for "Controlled-Release" which sends (should) out a steady release of the Paroxetine HCI throughout the day without having to dose a few different times a day....Alot of meds. have gone the CR route, Xanax and Adderall to name two off the top of my head, so that dosing is minimal throughout the day instead of having to remember if you took that 3rd pill or not.

Hope i've made sense here. I am on Paxil CR (never on the reg./standard version) myself.

Take care.

Actually, the only difference is the CR version has a coating that allows it to travel past your stomach to your lower intestine before being absorbed. If you'll look at prescribing information for Paxil vs Paxil CR, you will see that the CR isn't approved for as many things as the regular Paxil.

If you can tolerate (no stomach problems) the regular version, I would stick with it. I actually had withdrawals when I went from 20mg Paxil to 25mg of Paxil CR because it didn't absorb as well.

Also, since it breaks down in the lower intestine, it actually gave me severe diarrhea attacks.

Paxil CR came out of course because of patent issues on the regular version running out. All this infomation came from a pharmacist at Glaxo, the makers of it, not just my opinion.

so you mean there is really no difference?

I'm really having a hard time finding out the difference. I took my first dose of cr today, I dont feel any different, in fact I feel a little bit better, but it could just be circumstances around me have changed that's all.

My dose was 2 25 mg tablets, or the rough equivilant of 40 mg, which was my original dose of paxil (straight).

Hello again. I got the following info. from a book I have, written by James J. Rybacki, Pharm. D. Called- The Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs 2004 (great book, very informative).

"The controlled-release form offers a geomatrix technology thay may help minimize adverse events and improve how well patients take this medicine (adherence)."

Note the word "may" though....everyone is different and one person can react entirely differently to the same exact med. that the person next to them is taking in the same form! I had great success years back taking Effexor (NOT the XR form-the XR form of this particular med. made me feel just awful-go figure).

Have a great day.

It might work great for you. I didn't start feeling worse on CR till the 2nd or 3rd day.

The "geomatrix" is a neat word meaning, it passes through your stomach and breaks down in the lower intestine.

Yes I realize what it means. :) The question was though how did the CR work differently from the "reg." Paxil? I was pointing out that where it breaks down (CR) is differently (in most people) than where the reg. Paxil pill(s) do.

Miles of smiles.

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20020918/msgs/7717.html

Thanks!

Bob
