chronic facial tension

Posted by heavenlee on January 6, 2004, at 11:42:32

Five years ago I went through severe withdrawals from clonazepam, most withdrawal symptoms like insomnia have faded but I am left with severe muscle tension in my face. I havent been on any kind of meds in 5 years.I have a very good diet, no caffeine. Can anyone suggest something I can do to get rid of this tension. It is very difficult to socialize with people because at times my face is so tight I am unable to smile.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks God bless

Even marginal magnesium deficiancy can head to muscle hypercontraction. I would add 250-500mg of magnesium and see what that does.

What do you consider to be the best type of magnesium to take for muscle tension Linkage? I know there are different types oxide, citrate, glycinate.

Maybe try kava kava, valerian . . . also, hot damp towels applied to face. not real convenient, I know, but it should help.

Have you talked to your regular doctor about this? maybe you could see a specialist--physical therapy sounds like it might prove to be very helpful! maybe you just need to re-train the muscles? I'd also look into massage therapy--I had very tense jaw muscles last year (well, still do!), but was helped by a massage therapist.
Best,
L.

This best type of magnesium is "magnesium taurate." I only know of two manufactures of it; one is "douglas labs," the other is "cardiovascular research." Of the types you listed, magnesium oxide is the only one you want to avoid since it is virtually useless. See this site for everything you ever wanted to know about magnesium and much more: http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html

As for medication, the first thing I would try is Buspar (buspirone.) It is an anti-anxiety agent that is often prescribed to augment SSRI's in patients experiencing bruxism (teeth-grinding.) This medication cleared up a similar problem I was having and has absolutely no addiction/dependency potential so it's an easy med to get. Let us know if you decide to try it out.

Hope this helps,

scott

Hi HeavenLee,

I experience facial tension too. It gets very bad sometimes. It feels like dried egg white and cobb webs on my skin. This affects me socially too, as I feel unable to express myself naturally.

I will try magnesium soon.

Can you say if you have had any success with any methods ?

Kind regards,

Steve
