Change of Meds Today

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on July 23, 2003, at 16:56:01

Well I saw my psychiatrist today, and he upped the dosage of tramadol to 100mg four times daily (from 100mg three times daily) so that I can maintain a fairly constant blood level. I also traded off the Klonopin 6mg/day for Xanax XR 3mg/day. I see him again in two weeks, and then we're going to try raising the Xanax XR to 6mg, and probably higher after that.

Haven't picked up the Xanax XR from the pharmacy yet, so I don't have anything to report, but I'll keep y'all updated!

My pdoc gave me some samples of the Nicotrol Inhaler today as well. Wish me luck! :-)

May I ask why the switch from Klonopin. I'm taking it for anxiety and panic....3mg daily doesn't do anything. Pdoc so reluctant to up dosage.

In the past, I've generally found that Xanax works better for me than Klonopin. I just hated the four-to-five times daily dosing. So naturally Xanax XR sparked my curiosity. It has more of an antidepressant effect and seems (to me, at least) to be more "pro-social" than Klonopin. Don't get me wrong though, Klonopin is an absolutely wonderful medication if you're on the proper dose.

I'm currently trying to find the 'correct' dosage of Klonopin that will work for me. My pdoc is one of those reluctant types who is hesitant to prescribe higher dosages. I'm currently on 3mg daly....not working well at all for me. I know she can prescribe a higher dosage. I have a normally high tolerance to all meds.

Hi Ame,

I wish you the best of luck with your changes. Are you taking the Ultram for it's AD effect, or for pain?

Just curious...

Are you taking an SSRI also? Just wondering casue my doc gave some for the pain of a UTI and I saw it could cause seritonin syndrome and was afraid to take it

Thanks Rainee

God no, I wouldn't submit myself to the horrors of SSRI-taking. :-) Just the Ultram and Xanax for me (aside from my myriad of supplements), and they work just great.

I originally thought about trying Ultram along with Prozac, since it was the only SSRI I didn't have a single side effect from, but it didn't seem to do much for me when taken alone. So I figured maybe in combo with the Ultram and Xanax, it'd actually help. Effexor was also a consideration. But then I got to thinking about serotonin syndrome, and read up about it only to find out that those combinations probably weren't a good idea. I may supplement with high doses of melatonin, though... even though the risk of serotonin syndrome is there, it's much less so than with the serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Thanks, After looking I see have ultracet. I'm not sure how alike they are.
SSRI's help me in one way but make me very lethargic.

Thanks,
Rainee

Ultracet is a combination of a lower dose of tramadol (37.5mg, as opposed to 50mg in Ultram) and 325mg of acetaminophen. I certainly wouldn't recommend taking this for psychiatric purposes, as you'd need to take three at a time to get the therapeutic dosage of ~100mg, three times a day. That would be 2,900mg of acetaminophen daily, which would wreak havoc on your liver.

2,925mg of acetaminophen... sorry about that. :-)
