maybe, is all I can say now. I don't think it is less effective, but not sure how great it is for sleep. It's easy to switch, but good sleep may be interrupted a bit. I am on 20 mgs in the a.m. and p.m.

Hi.

I am such a pea-brain. I never bothered asking either of you what you were taking Geodon for.

So...

What are you taking Geodon for?

Thanks.

I just started Geodon last week as a replacement for my Zyprexa. I've been taking Z for about 3 years or so now and my doctor and I agreed that I would be a good candidate for Geodon. The Z helped best with obsessive thoughts of suicide and death. It also greatly relieved my anxiety.

Right now I have some overlap of the two but am taking 20 mg twice a day of the Geodon which will go up to 40 mg twice/day next week when I go completely off of Zyprexa. So far I haven't noticed any particular side effects or added relief but there is no downside so far.

Taking it as mood stabilizer with lamictal; as anti-anxiety instead of zyprexa cuz the weight gain issue is unwanted. I think it may be equivalent in some respects with no downside yet other than it's not as good for the sleep as zyprexa

Don't you mean, "For what are you taking Geodon?" Sorry, just an anal lesson in grammar:]

I am taking Geodon for additional mood stabilization, ruminating thoughts, treatment resistant depression (I'm Bipolar) and anxiety. So far, it's working really well. As soon as I get adjusted to the Lamictal (I'm on Trileptal as well), we may slowly drop it and see what happens.

Good to see your name so much lately. How are you feeling?

Q for Karen: Geodon vs. Amisulpride

Karen,

You have tried both amisulpride and Geodon (plus Zyprexa, sulpiride).

Amisulpride is very helpful with my dysthymia, my socialbility (avoidant personality), and my mental fatigue (vigilance).

I know amiuslpride worked for you but also may have eventuallly induced mania as part of your bipolar disorder, if I remember right.

Do you have any idea on whether I could substitute Geodon for amiuslpride to treat my symptoms?

Hi Andrew!

Yes, you could give it a try. Amisulpride I think, was responsible for my cycling although it could have been a number of things, seeing as I was on Adderall at the time as well.

My favorite of all time was Sulpiride, which as you know is not available here and not covered by my insurance.

Geodon is working for me. I also don't seem to have the sleep problems with it that others do.

My son refuses to take topamax as an add-on for mania symptoms because it impairs him cognitively. Risperdal puts him to sleep. Geodon is supposed to be better re: less sleepiness and fewer cognitive problems. Any comments on this? Thank you!

According to Geodon's official monograph, somnolence is less likely than with Risperdal. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me; I had a lot of drowsiness with Geodon, but no cognitive problems as evidenced by my usual musical ability.

Zyprexa might be a good choice for your son, considering it is effective and approved specifically for treating mania this year. I never had any side-effects on Zyprexa, and it helps with depression by working on serotonin receptors.

Here's where you MMMV. Meds tend to make me very drowsy and cognitively impaired, particularly the anticonvulsants and the newer neuoleptics. Geodon didn't make me drowsy at all, so I was very optimistic until I developed akithisa (severe internal restlessness which is possible with any neuroleptic). Zyprexa, Clozaril, Seroquel and Respiridol all knocked me out. Geodon might be worth a try, although many people have done very well on Zyprexa.

Hope you find the answer soon. BTW, Topomax made me feel like a total idoit, so I can identify with your son.

Blessings,

Chris A.
