Dallas, Texas--born and bred. I detest this place. The climate is atrocious; the only season that is tolerable is fall--all 4-5 days of it. And then, only if you don't have allergies; Dallas is the allergy capital of the US--maybe the world. Dallasites have always seemed alien to me; for me, they remain models of conspicuous consumption in a totally man-made environment.

I miss the West Coast. Altho I lived in Houston, Boston (Cambridge), and New York City when I was younger, my best memories are from the 10 years I lived in Rustic Canyon when my children were little. Rustic Canyon is a tiny coastal niche tucked between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles. It has the only wet-all-year stream and the only redwood trees in southern California. We lived in a modest, mostly glass house on a hillside pad in a grove of eucalyptus trees. We had no need for air conditioning, window coverings or screens. In the summer all manner of wildlife would come down from nearby mountains to the stream to drink; my kids could climb in it and walk to the beach. Unfortunately, my old neighbor says that LA is no longer remotely liveable, my former house recently sold for 1.5 mil and she is ready to cash out and join the californication of Seattle.

I brought my kids back to Dallas when they were school age because my depression worsened and I had the vain hope that my family could be an emotional backup. I remain here because both my kids are still in Texas (1 in Houston, 1 in Dallas).

Depressed and Dissatisfied in Dallas--medlib

I've moved 11 times in the last 18 years and I found that I can live anywhere (even Oklahoma with the red dirt) because I have made FRIENDS everywhere I've gone and that made it fine.

Now, I live in the gold country of California, about 2 hours east of San Francisco and 1 hour south of Sacramento.

Sounds like Stockton. I live in S.D. where the sun shines a zillion days a year and my garden is fantastic. Best roses anywhere. Californian's are mentally ill, too! Know why, cause most of them are transplants! (that was a joke!).

Valley Springs actually, in Calaveras County. Remember the Mark Twain story of the frog jump? School is out for 2 days later this month for the County Fair. You know you are in a small town when that happens. The nearest Wal-Mart is in Jackson- a curvy, 30 min. away. There is no private psychiatrist in the entire county. We have to drive 1 hour to Stockton or Sacramento.
My favorite place is up the coast and then inland an hour at Ukiah, vineyards, Redwoods, wonderful weather. And friends. It has been more difficult making friends here, which is depressing to me.

allow absences during the annual Farm Show. I always

I live in the LA area, and I have to say I liked the DC suburbs, the Detroit suburbs, and the Chicago suburbs, and Toronto, much better. There is an attitude here that is so shallow and uncaring. Maybe other parts of the state are different.

Vesper,
Don't judge the rest of California by what you experience in La La Land, the rest of us are quite normal (well, within reason anyway)

Hey neighbor-

I'm in the Columbia/Maytown area (between York &
Lancaster) near the Susquehanna. I work in Hunt
Valley, Md. (on med leave right now).

I'm certain there are more of us in the mid-Atlantic
area.

Take care

LA SUCKS LA SUCKS LA SUCKS LA ********************************

(Theme song from Dragnet - backround)

I know - I live here. I was even born here; but don't tell anyone.
LA, like NY, is a big, dirty, scary, very nasty world-class city that will eat you alive. Every language on earth is spoken here. The air is unbreathable, and if you don't have a car, you're shit-outta-luck.
There are vast areas where even the police are afraid to go.

You looking for a quiet haven? You want to park your Volvo wagon, and shuffle down quiet leafy streets to Ye Old Expresso Bar, and discuss late 17th century French poetry? This ain't the place.
Do you snap your gum, can't remember what century the Civil War was fought, and use the term "Awesome!" a lot? LA is the place for you. Where did the Beverly Hillbillies come when they struck it rich? Anybody watch Jay Leno when he asks people on the street simple questions? This place sucks.

The chief industry here is movies. And while a lot of movies are sentimental, the movie industry itself is about as sentimental as a that chromed, silly-putty-robot who chased Arnold Schwartzenegar in Terminator II.
Gorgeous, blonde, barbie-doll types, trying to break into show-biz; are thick as flies; I can hardly stand it. People are so shallow here, you can use 'em for place-mattes. They spend all their time at the gym, working out with their personal trainer, Bruce; talking into their cellphones about last night's guided visualization session with their guru, Zonga Dim; while outside, a poor Latino polishes their Land-Rover. Have I left out any cliche's? Are they true? Yes.

Despite all this, a few creative people do manage eak out a living on the crumbs that fall from the movie stars' plates. As the home of the film, TV, Music, and Computer Media industries, it's pretty intense here, and uncaring. I had a girlfriend who was a newspaper photographer; I went along on assignment a lot. I saw the whole stinking mess from the desert to the sea. If you guys can spead the word about how LA sucks, I would appreciate it, because it's getting crowded here. Thanks

(Dragnet theme fades)

John, I guess you pointed out at least one advantage New York has over LA--not only do you not need a car, it is actually better not to have one.

I really do have a serious question---why do you stay there?

Boston too. A car is a liability here unless you live off in the suburbs.

Apparently the mass transit system in LA just isn't adequate. Part of that is because the place is so damned *big* and sprawling (so there'd have to be a lot more stops). I don't know about BART (SF) -- any comments on that one?

I tried biking as a means of transportation when I was in Santa Barbara. The problem with this was that it was very hilly there. It was also nasty weather (people insisted that El Nino was to blame), and that didn't exactly help. But there wasn't any other way for me to get to campus -- walking to my office would have taken nearly an hour.

> I really do have a serious question---why do you stay there?

Love it or leave it? You know it's never that easy....

More on So. Cal

I'm in So. Cal in an extremely beautiful coastal area. Property values continue to soar every year. Developers have built up almost every inch of this place now. More and more, I get very discouraged by the pompous shows of affluence. People can be extremely shallow and snobbish in this area and are very status oriented. One of the few things Dr. Laura ever said that I agree with is that people these days value success over goodness. (Please accept my sincerest apologies for quoting her.) A visit to a new mall was a jarring experience recently. The huge parking structure was filled with top of the line Mercedes and Lexus (Lexi?). My 6 year old Honda Civic was the jallopy of the group, and it still looks pretty good. When I went inside, shoppers were dripping with wealth. People usually dress that nicely at events of high culture, but why dress up that way to buy candle holders from Pottery Barn? I live in a mall culture. Also, this is considered a "white flight" area, so there's not a lot of racial diversity besides the day laborors who come over from Mexico. I think around here you just have to look a little harder to find sincere people. They are out there, but not in large numbers. Lol, I can rag on So. Cal, but I get offended when out-of-staters do it.

We really are in lower Al. though, about 50 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. A beautiful city w/temperate winters and lovely old architecture, not to mention huge live oaks hanging w/spanish moss and a springtime azalea boom.
I was born here, we moved to Selma,Al.in '57 and lived there til '67.
A very interesting time to be in that little backwater.I had a great childhood there, swimming in creeks and hunting for snakes, always barefoot it seems.
Then back to Mobile for 14 years, then 3 years in New Orleans (one in the French Quarter) and 5 In Jacksonville, Fl. Then, back home to Mobile where family is gathering again as our parents age, and need us more. (I need them JUST as much.)
It's been good to be in the bosom of my family as health crises, births and deaths have occurred.
And, as to age (I missed that thread) I'm 44.

Noa- I really wrote that LA thing in the spirit of hyperbole, humor, and entertainment.

As an LA native, of course I found some of the remarks on the thread previous to mine about LA a little stale, but I have the West coast attitude I guess, ie I'm not going to run to the computer and type "Oh, you're so wrong!" If people like take potshots at the big bad city - that's fine. I'll even join in. After all LA is a nightmare, but it's also one of the most exciting cities in the world right now. By that I mean culturally and just a kind of thrum of energy when you jam so many different kinds of people together. And just on a physical level, it's really kind wild here. In the last 5-8 years LA's had major wildfires, flooding, a massive earthquake, and a really bad riot. Whatever you say about LA, it's not boring. I saw a coyote on my street the other night; I can be in uninhabited mountains, or 50 story skyscrapers within a 15 minute drive from my house. I guess that why I stay.

That, and I don't quite have the money to buy a 5,000 acre ranch outside Sante Fe, New Mexico; but that's another story. ;^)

I think I might hit alot of the spots that have been mentioned so far. I was born in Lumberton, NC, and then as a small child lived in Northern Virginia, in the Blue Ridge valley, near Winchester in a town called Berryville. When I was 10 we moved to Aberdeen, MD (not far some some of you in Central PA). Went to college in Baltimore. Met my husband there, who is from SO CAL (Born and raised in San Diego and graduated from Berkeley). We then lived a year in Mexico City, Mexico. From there we went to New Orleans, for 8 1/2 years. It is still my favorite place. From there we spent a little time in San Jose, Costa Rica and finally, 12 years ago, we came to live in Miami, FL.

We don't need Ritalin here, there is enough Cuban expresso coffee to go around.

This is the end of the thread.
