Super Anxiety Day

Posted by pegasus on February 19, 2004, at 12:13:25

Oh, I am just a mess today. I am anxiety central. My hands are shaking, I can't stay focused on anything. I've been writting irritable posts to babble. What's my deal? I'm not on any new meds. I feel like I'm about to give a big important speech to a hundred critical colleages. But I'm not! I don't have anything big going on today or any time in the forseeable future! No public performances, no therapy sessions, no nothing. I'm just jumping out of my skin. I hate it when this happens.

Danga danga danga blanga jang janga jangly blinga yippiyiyi.

Hmmmmm...

How did you sleep?
Are you eating too much sugar?
Coffee?
Is "Aunt Flo" visiting?
Any bad dreams?
Are you excited as opposed to anxious maybe?
Are you delaying doing something that you need to do and are pretending will go away if you just "dont think about it?"
How's your weather?

That's a few things that I can think of....

Now for helping yourself:

Can you go for a walk?
Can you call someone?
Plan a nice hot bath for later with candles.
Listen to some soothing music or a good "meditation" tape.
Drink some nice herbal tea.

Or you can tell me I'm crazy and to go to hell if that will help relieve some anxiety!

Tooter :)

I hate days like that! Sometimes I can figure out what's wrong, but other times it just seems physiological.

Sometimes if I sit in the bath and let the water run over my hand, and just focus on the feel of the water (it's a very complex feel) something opens up and I realize that I was worried about something on a deeper level than I could initially access.

But... Sometimes not.

Hang in there. This too shall pass. (One of my favorite sayings until it pops into my mind on a good day.)

Hmmm.. I wonder how we both came to the water resolution.

I always run to a bathroom when I really start climbing the walls and turn on the faucet and just let the water run over 1 hand... and concentrate on it... sometimes that's all I need.

Dinah- we are water buddies :)

And I thought I was alone. :) Do you love waterfalls too? It hadn't really occurred to me that cold water would work. I thought it needed to be warm so that I could focus totally on the pattern of the water falling on my hand. I'll have to give that a try. Way less inconvenient than having to stop and take a bath.

I try and go to a bathroom at work that no one else uses, so I'm alone for a while... and I usually use cold water :)

I LOVE waterfalls. Water and candles calm me down so much- it amazing that it both works for us. Do you have a little fountain at home? I have a fish tank in my bedroom that sounds like a fountain- makes for the best napping :)

Thanks you guys for being sympathetic. I just want to scream! I'll go try the water thing.

. . . Hmm. . . interesting. It is a bit calming. Thanks for the suggestion.

To answer the questions:

> How did you sleep? Really hard and pretty long
> Are you eating too much sugar? none so far
> Coffee? nope, I know I can't handle coffee
> Is "Aunt Flo" visiting? Thank god, no
> Any bad dreams? Hey, maybe. I have a feeling . ..
> Are you excited as opposed to anxious maybe? Don't think so
> Are you delaying doing something that you need to do and are pretending will go away if you just "dont think about it?" Hmmm. Maybe, but I don't know what.
> How's your weather? Storm's a coming. Does that make you anxious?!?! We're supposed to get a blizzard this afternoon.

When I get home I'm going to try the meditation tape idea. And maybe a bath. I just went to the humane society with a friend from work and petted all the dogs and cats. I thought that would help, but it really didn't (although it was fun).

Thanks for your help!

I am seriously terrified of fire, so candles don't help much. :) Well, they might if someone else lit them and all I had to do was watch.

I have a couple of indoor fountains (I can't imagine where one of them is though. hmmm....) and an outdoor fountain. None of them is working right now. :( I'd love to have a fish tank, but I need pets that can tell me when I've forgotten to feed them.

My mother shares my love of waterfalls so our childhood vacations were spent driving from waterfall to waterfall and walking long paths while we kids complained. Ahhh, those were the days.

My therapist gets a huge kick out of my love affair with water.

It could possibly be the weather. That brings on migraines in me, why not other physiological changes. I get so exasperated with my faulty body sometimes. :(

Hope the bath and meditation tape help.

I hope today is better.

I've been baking...and baking...and baking. Made 8 dozen cookies, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, pineapple upside down cake, muffins (recipe above), and cup cakes for Val. day. My office is begging me to stop. I even took some to my Therapist. He thought it was a great way to handle stress. I don't know...

Just a thought, cause I HATE water. I like warm, solid things. :)

Thanks everyone for your concern and advice. I did manage to calm down over the weekend, after some meditating, sleeping, finishing outstanding projects, and a lot of bouncing and agitated talking to my long suffering husband. I used many of your suggestions, including cooking and baths, and running water, and exercise. I think I learned some new stuff here! This happens to me every now and then, and I HATE it, so any new tools are most welcome.
