Anyone on Lexapro 20mg?

Posted by JohnnyBLinux on July 17, 2008, at 23:31:34

I saw my pdoc yesterday. He bumped the daily dose of Lexapro from 10mg to 20mg. I had no idea the dose was even increased until I picked up my prescriptions from the pharmacy! Can anyone share their experience with Lexapro 20mg? Was it positive or negative? I'd like to hear from you. Thanks. Cheers.

Johnny:

I took Lexapro at a dose of 40mg for eight months in 2004. It did absolutely nothing for me. I know that is supposed to be a high dose. But other than 10 lbs of weight gain, I couldn't feel a single...I didn't get any anti-depressant or anti-anxiety effect from this drug. That's my two cents worth. I hope you have better results. Seems like some people on this board have had positive results with Lex, if I remember correctly.

Chris

Gee, that seems odd that your pdoc didn't tell you of the increase. I got an increase from 10 to 20 about a month ago, I was told that it might be beneficial to increase it.

I have noticed a slight decrease in my knee-jerk anxiety reactions...... sometimes I can even rationalize things BEFORE the anxiety/paranoia kick in-- which is a first for me. I would say the anxiety and then inturn irrational thinking has gone down a bit. But the down side is-- I lack energy-- and that is not good as being hypo-thyroid(low thyroid) in the first place, I lack energy most days and now it's even worse. But--one good thing, I have only gained two pounds so far-- unlike I did on Celexa. (was on Celexa 7 years ago and in 6 months of being on it I gained 20 lbs)

I would like to not feel so tired...... though, I had to do something as I was entering suicide ideation-- was so tired of feeling like any minute a trauma was going to happen(been this way most of my life-- so sick of it!).... always so hypervigilent and such skewed thoughts.(it's still hard sometimes to tell which thoughts are skewed and which thoughts are rational)

So yea, there are good and bad for me..... guess one has to weigh the two and decide which is the better route to go. I wish you the best with whatever you decide.

Well I'm starting to feel a change in my mood / cognition. Feel a little strange, tense & spacey; scatter brained. I think I need to eat more. Lexapro has definitely cut my appetite. It is brightening my mood which is of course good. I've been in a rather dark place so this a relief.

I'm hoping I made a good decision to take Lexapro. I start to doubt myself during these periods of change / improvement. Wish there was someone to talk to...

Speaking from my own personal experience, it seems like it couldn't hurt to give the Lexapro a chance. I often want to stop talking meds before giving them a chance to work. At least that's what most psychiatrists tell me. You can always stop the drug, change the drug, or change dose back in time if things don't seem right. I hope you find the drug/dose that works for you!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply!! True, some people give up on medication before it has had time to work. There's a quasi-rough adjustment period for me as my body adjusts to changes in brain chemistry. I'm feeling better now compared to yesterday afternoon. I'm not changing anything. Staying on the 20mg strength of Lexapro.

I'm more hopeful now that Lexapro is working as designed. :-)

I took Lexapro for a while and it did nothing for me except gain tons of weight. I wouldn't get back on it but that's just my experience.

I was on it, got bumped up to 30, but now my dose is down to 20 again. I have to say that at the time, if I wasn't on it, I would have come too close to real suicide. But I had been put on many other drugs (most anti-psychotics)- which were totally wrong for me.I started to feel worse and worse and less and less alive. If it's not working for you after a while, you need to talk to your physician! It's important to find the right combination to feel the cement blocks removed from your feet.
