seroquel

Will 25 mg, morning and night of Seroquel help my irritable, on- edge, aggressive 17 year old son? He has trouble going to school. Anxiety controls his life. Does he need something else or a higher dose?

I'm currently taking 150mg of Seoquel (50mg morning / 100mg evening) and I really don't think it has helped my anxiety at all. I've been on 10mg Cipralex (Escitalorpram) for the last three & a half weeks and it is only now that my panic and anxiety has started to get slightly better.

I'm firmly putting my recovery (albeit a slow one) down to the Cipralex. I don't think the Seroquel has helped in the slightest. I was on Seroquel for around four weeks before I started the Cipralex and it didn't do a thing.

However, I have read, numerous times, on this site that Seroquel has really helped some people. Just because it hasn't helped me doesn't necessarily mean it won't help your son. We are all different and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another (and vice versa).

The only way you will really know is to give the Seroquel a fair go. Antipsychotic medications tend to take 'days' to work rather than 'weeks' like antidepressants do. If after, say, seven days you don't see any benefit, go back to your doctor and get him to raise the dose - 50mg is a really low dose of Seroquel. I have heard that to have any really effect on Dopamine levels within the brain, Seoquel needs to be taken at a minimum of 150-200mg.

If you get no joy with the Seroquel, you could try something like Zyprexa (Olanzapine). Again, it's something that a lot of people on here seem to find really effective for symptoms similar to your son's. Not sure what your son has tried, but have you thought of trying any of the SSRIs? They seem to be the first line of treatment; and just maybe what will really help your son.

Best of luck!!

well one thing the seroquel will do is make him sleep and that can go a long way toward calming someone's nerves
I honestly don't know how anyone takes seroquel at any time other than night time and still manages to stay awake.
It might help to mellow him out some...I suppose you have to give it a go. Just keep seeing your doc.
Good luck :-)

Klonopin?

My son has been on lexapro and lithium, but both gave him stomach, intestinal problems. He's been on depakote with no effect.
His diagnosis range from bipolar or GAD, depression. Doctors can't agree because he's lethargic not manic.

I might ask the doctor whether the Seroquel should be combined with Lamictal or an antidepressant like Effexor,Wellbutrin or Cymbalta. He hasn't tried those SSRIs yet.

The seroquel makes him feel blah with no joy for life. Maybe the antidepressants will make him happy. The sedative effect of Seroquel probably will help him with his impulsiveness and anger/rage.
Maybe a combination will work.

hi obs

i started sero a week ago, i have begun to sleep better every night,

i take 50 at night and when i wake up in the middle of the night, i take another 50,

seems to work!

but the medicine problems are always individual, some medicines suit you and others don't, so just rely on the doc,

i started sero because it won't worsen my parkinson,

regards chris

I would probably try a much higher dose first. 300mg at night, maybe a small dose during day, 100mg. If that does not work, zyprexa was realy good for irritability, for me. I now take perphenazine, because of weight gain. This one seems to be helping too, but have not been on it long.

Dear Zyprexa,

i have sometimes tried but with no results, or with awful results

No, I'm not an MD, wish I was. Sorry if I come across that was. I have been successfull at picking out a few good meds for me. Ones the doctor would not suggest. Like metformin, perphenazine, just by doing reasearch on line, and guess what they were actualy good picks.
