Wellbutrin: Norepinephrine vs. Dopamine / Amitript

Posted by GOGO on August 27, 2007, at 4:29:16

Hello,

Does anybody know if Wellbutrin affects norepinephrine more than dopamine? or does it affect both equally?

I'm atypically depressed & anergetic. Totally. Can't sleep and even don't want to do things that I thought I really wanted to do ....

Some cocktail I've come up with ... is

1. Zoloft + Strattera + Wellbutrin
(along with Tyrosine supplements)

2. Amitriptyline
(TCA that affects serotonin & norepinephrine equally)

Something that just give me boost and make me feel confident ... I need that.

Some comments:

Strattera + Wellbutrin sounds like hell. But I can't stand Strattera alone, so who knows. I'm not up to date on the current theory of Wellbutrin's mechanism, but I know from personal experience that it can cause quite a bit of anxiety/agitation in combination with other drugs that increase the release/prevent uptake of NE.

Amitryptiline affects a lot more than serotonin and norepinephrine.. I've never heard of anyone claiming that it offered a boost, quite the opposite.

Cymbalta or Effexor are probably better choices for balanced serotonin/norepinephrine effects. Provigil also might help; it helped me with energy and confidence for a little while. Ditto with EMSAM, Parnate and Adderall.

I take Effexor/wellbutrin/Lamictal combo which has been the best for my anergetic symptoms of depresssion. What is your diagnosis? What are you currently on?

Ah ....
my pdoc gave me lexapro samples and then I refused to take them ... that was 3 months ago ... and then everything got worse and I'm still reading posts here about meds.

I'm happy to hear that your cocktail works! Would you please tell me the dosage and how long it took to see the effect come along?

Thank you

Wellbutrin probably affects norepinephrine release more than anything else.

You proably want to look at something to get yourself sleeping better.

If you are not sleeping well, then you are probably going to lack energy and motivation the next day.

A low dose of amitryptaline might help sleep. You could maybe take some wellbutrin in the morning too, if you continue to experinne lack of energy or motivation etc.

Effexor targets serotonin and norepinephrine. Doses at 150mg and above kicks in the norepinephrine. I have mild bipolar with atypical symptoms, esp. in the winter months. I also have SAD. The Lamictal really helps with my moods with no nasty side effects like the other mood stabilizer. The wellbutrin was added to counteract the sexual side effects from effexor. I was on a combo of imipramine/paxil, which worked fairly well, however, not as well as effexor. Amitrip. is more sedating and is very good for sleep. From my past research, the tricyclics work well esp. for men who have anxiety/sleep problems and melancholic depressions. They are very good AD's and refered to as the "old faithfuls".

If you are already not sleeping very well then Wellbutrin will only make this worse. A common reason why people can't sleep is excess norepinephrine so this may be a bad idea.

You are not taking into account the considerable number of folks who react paradoxically to this med.
For me, I sleep earlier, and better. there are also scientific reports indicating that it can improve certain phases of sleep, notably the R.E.M. phase.

I agree, sometimes Wellbutrin causes much less insomnia than an SSRI.
