Effexor targets serotonin and norepinephrine. Doses at 150mg and above kicks in the norepinephrine. I have mild bipolar with atypical symptoms, esp. in the winter months. I also have SAD. The Lamictal really helps with my moods with no nasty side effects like the other mood stabilizer. The wellbutrin was added to counteract the sexual side effects from effexor. I was on a combo of imipramine/paxil, which worked fairly well, however, not as well as effexor. Amitrip. is more sedating and is very good for sleep. From my past research, the tricyclics work well esp. for men who have anxiety/sleep problems and melancholic depressions. They are very good AD's and refered to as the "old faithfuls".
