They might be looking more for criminal background than employment history. When I worked in investment/insurance department of a bank they were looking to make sure I had no criminal record. I had an obvious gap of 10 months of unemployment and it wasn't questioned. I had to do a drug test, too and was fingerprinted and my fingerprints were registered with the government. All that for a low paying boring job.
The last three large companies I worked for had policies that said they would only release employment information of start date, end date, job title and eligibilty for rehire. Hopefully the places you worked for have something similar in place. The companies I worked for did it that way to protect themselves against lawsuits from ex-employees. Even the job where I handed in my two weeks notice and came back the next day to find all my stuff packed in a box has me eligible for rehire. I did give notice, it wasn't my fault hell boss wanted me out of there quickly.
Definitely don't sweat the drug test, they are looking for illegal drugs, not prescription.
