i get that it takes a considerable investment of time to get a person to put in those focused hours. but we just don't seem at all good at sorting them...

there is this 'natural talent' or 'raw ability' thing (mostly kids who are just big for their age and / or grade level) which needs to be distinguished from the kids who have the things in place such that they can reliably turn up to practice for days on end for years of their lives...

kids who are trainable. so they can practice entering into the pool perfectly vertically over and over and over and over and over and over and over... instead of only really being interested in 'showing off' with 'tricks' they don't have the abilty to pull off (e.g., because they can't get themselves into any of the positions -- even less hit the positions at the right time).

at school it was always about the bullies. give everyone a bit of a go and then invest (insofar as there was any investment at all) in the one who was naturally the best. i remember that got me to represent the school for breaststroke and backstroke year afer year after year after year. but at regionals i came up against kids whose parents got or sent them to swim training before or after school for years... and i was totally outclassed. which is, of course, as it should be. hard work pays off. for sure. but who knows how i would have done if i had have gotten to swim training.

anyway... i turned 30 and decided to learn how to do a cartwheel and a handstand... turn 40 and take up diving? we'll see...

water polo?

i don't know.

we'll see how long it takes for me to get sick of / from the chlorine.
