Ways my cat is helping me

Posted by Partlycloudy on September 8, 2008, at 13:18:06

She's been following me pretty closely lately, especially since my step daughter vacated the premises. It's cleared the air of quite a bit of tension, and my cat keeps finding ways of thanking me.

Every time I walk into the bedroom, if she's lying on the floor, she'll flip on to her back and start to writhe and purr, apparently in sheer joy at the sight of me. She likes for me to get on my hands and knees (that is, not talk down to her), and give her a really good scritching around her ears. If I'm not quite in the right spot, she'll use her paws to move my hand to the correct place. When she's had enough joy she miraculously springs onto her fours paws at the same time and trots away, quite satisfied with herself.

She'll follow me all around the house, but really loves the bathrooms, where she can get fresh running water. This is far superior to the standing, inferior junk that sits in her bowl all day long and only gets changed once a day - ugh. She much prefers to stick her head under a trickle of tap water and let it drip off the end of her nose on to her lapping tongue; or she'll hold out her paw and lap up the water that falls off the end there. The performance is not complete until she jumps off the counter and then shakes the droplets off, and then runs away as fast as she can, perhaps surprised that she's just realized that she let herself get we and that cats aren't supposed to like water.

Her favorite place to hang out is the end of the sofa where I like to sit and read. It's important that she be within my arm's reach, because the whole idea is that she'll stare at me until I realize that she wants me to pet her. Actually, she wants me to tickle the end of her nose, which is kind of unusual for a cat, but she loves it. She even slobbers a little bit, highly undignified for a cat, but we don't tell on her, will we?

The other place she'll hang out is on the floor beside my feet, pretending that she's a dog.
