I got a kit at the bookstore. "Klutz learn to knit". It included a nice book with pictures, some basic acrylic yarn, 2 needles a crochet hook, and little buttons.
Enough yarn to make several projects, and step-by-step instuctions. Things like a pocket for an iPod, a scarf, a hat, etc.
The yarn is not very pretty, but was easy to work with.
Traditionally knitting is children's work, so I figure a PhD candidate has the necessary cognitive apparatus to learn how to knit.
practice and motivation are the main reasons why everyone doesn't knit, I suppose. No one is "born" to be a knitter. It's just pulling a loop of yarn through another loop. over and over again. :)
