Tex, why *not* go by yourself? you can stay in youth hostels , which are clean, and often in spectacular locations (like in a castle), and have lots of fun people who are trying to get out and see a bit of the world. You sound pretty social, and I think you might have a LOT of fun on a short trip to France, or Brazil, or ?
Texas is kind of hard to get out of. I think Hot Springs AR is nice, and they have spas there that are pretty reasonable. New Mexico is gorgeous. I like Albuquerque especially. And I can go on and on about E. TN and KY and W. NC. I love the Southern Appalachians.
