Hi,
Seeing as how I'm a bit mired in rejection sensitivity again, I can talk about it, unfortunately. It stinks. It's very painful. It's hard for othes to understand. Heck, it's hard for me to understand at times. And it's horribly embarrassing when you sort of realize that whatever hurt so much actually very likely wasn't about you at all. I hate that. (Although I suppose it's a good thing that it isn't all about me.) :)

Rejection sensitivity can be one symptom of atypical depression. Another classic symptom of atypical depression is mood reactivity, meaning you can feel happy and light in some circumstances and down in the dumps in others. (In major depression, the sad and down feeling is more prevalent and feeling is much harder and much less likely to occur even in happy circumstances.) Another difference between atypical and major depression is hypersomnia (sleeping a lot more) and/or hyperphagia (eating a lot more) versus the insomnia and loss of appetite that many experience with major depression.

MAOI's such as Nardil, Parnate, and the newest which is Emsam are very good for atypical depression. In my case, it's been the only type of med which has had a significant effect. MAOI's are also quite good for social anxiety, and many report success with that kind of treatment.

Dinah also mentioned Risperdal as helping her with rejection sensitivity. I have never tried that.

What's also helped me with it a great deal is psychotherapy. My T has helped me to see that I have a strong tendency towards rejection sensitivity and likely have always been that way. We've talked a great deal about this specifically, but also indirectly. As I talk about other painful stuff, it seems there is an element of RS in a lot of what is painful to me.

I hope this helps. If you are interested in learning more about MAOIs or Risperdal, you likely can find a lot by searching through the archives on the meds board if you don't feel ready to post there yet.

Take care,

gg
