When I was a kid we had a male cat that would wait until we were all out of the house and then go down to the laundry room in the basement and bring up dirty socks. While he did this he would howl as if in pain. He would deposit the socks in the living room, and then go down for more. Sometimes we'd come home from church to find every dirty sock in the house in the living room. Every now and then if I stayed up late reading quietly, I'd catch him at it. He'd freeze and drop the sock as soon as he saw me.

While I can't explain this, it does sound similar to what others have described. And it seems to be mainly male cats who do this. Maybe it's a hunting simulation thing? Or maybe they're just trying to be mysterious?
