Explaoning a cat's behavior isn't possible for a human. I've lived with cats for almost 40 years and I don't have a clue... My cat teaches me what she wants me to do, not the other way around.
That said, I had a cat a long time ago. At one point, we got a kitten, and this male cat would force it to the ground and groom it. Perhaps he just didn't think the kitten was clean enough. This behavior continued for many many years.
It might be possiblle that your cat is a little lonely. I don't know.
If you really want to know, you might contact the veterenarian department at a university, or the extension service. They might have an answer for you.
