Horizontal surfaces attract stuff. Reduce the number of tables etc. that you own.
Try to underfurnish your space - either by having a big space with not too much stuff or by having really minimal stuff in a smaller space. The extra floor and wall space makes it seem less cluttered, even when it's a mess.
No Nick-Knacks.
Go for the minimalist look.
