i decided to email the director of multicultural student affairs at johns hopkins my story.
i thought i'd try contacting him, as i'm hispanic, and his mission involves assisting minority jhu students -- which i'm hoping to be!
it's funny -- i always felt shy about pursuing assistance via channels for 'minorities,' as i did not have a stereotypical 'underpriviledged minority' upbringing. (i grew up in middle class family in rural areas, not in a 'project,' and speak english as a native language -- although i learned it along with spanish in my early years.)
however, i'm now realizing that if i had had a mother from the united states, i would have been at an advantage because my mother would have understood the culture around attending university and selecting colleges. in addition, if i were from a solely 'white' family, i may have had grandparents that had attended college -- there would have been a greater wealth of knowledge about and expectation of success in college overall in my family.
maybe that is a long justification for using these resources, but maybe i need it to feel right with myself.
anyways, i don't expect that with a bad record being a minority will earn me a pass -- things don't work that way. but i am hoping that by contacting this gentleman, i will find some assistance as i work towards this dream.
hope i did the right thing by spilling my guts to him.
