I swear I think he is reading Babble. He called and said everything I said he should have said. He apologized for not having the ability to do it sooner. He told me, generally and without specifics, what was going on and what to expect. He said he wasn't calling all his patients, but after twenty years he thought I deserved more than to have him just disappear, and that he had called as soon as he was able to. He said he had been worried how this would affect me.
I cried and thanked him. I told him that after twenty years I had finally grown to trust that he wouldn't do that to me, and the fact that he hadn't done that to me hadn't really been able to shake my certainty.
He is expecting to be back at some point and has promised to let me know his plans. I don't know what the future will hold. I'm positive that this won't just go away, and it will never be possible to rely on him the way I did. Whatever happened, he did leave me wondering whether he was dying, whether he just hadn't cared enough to bother to contact me. It can't be undone.
But I'm so happy that he did call and did say the things he said. They were things I needed to hear, no matter what.
