Despite this error, I am still wondering how one is to reconcile your report of a proscription of the use of mind altering substances and the biblical ritualized drinking of wine, a well known mind altering substance. Scholars argue whether the "yayin" of the bible even means fermented wine. I look forward to your sharing your thoughts on this matter. I don't yet know of a proscription in the bible of the use of medicines to treat painful and debilitating mental illnesses. I imagine this has been an issue for talmudic discussion. I haven't looked into it, though.
