Water intoxication occurs when large amounts of water are taken in too quickly. Depending on existing electrolyte balance, as little as 2 litres (1/2 gallon), taken in one sitting, can be fatal. It's not the daily dose (a healthy person can process 15 litres/4 gallons per day), it's the rate of intake that matters. Water intake should not exceed one litre/quart per hour.
