if you are just starting out on them, they can actually can be stimulating (similar to the way painkillers are--it's the "high"). taken over long periods of time, benzos will definitely increase/worsen anxiety. rebound anxiety is especially bad w long term use.
Speaking from experience here--i took Xanax, klonopin & Valium in excess amounts daily for years. now that I don't take them regularly, my anxiety is generally in check.
