I don't doubt that this could be the main reason for discontinuation. However, I would be curious to know what is the percentage of those who continue treatment with Abilify that experience a milder self-limiting akathisia-like syndrome. I have seen this occur in others and witnessed it in myself. In fact, I am currently following someone who has just started taking Abilify 5mg last week. So far, the pattern of akathisia-like side effects that she is experiencing resembles the mild form, and are currently dissipating.
