Although modafinil is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor like methylphenidate (and cocaine), its histaminergic effects seem to be produced by some other action that is unique to modafinil in comparison with the other stimulants. Possibly, the other target of modafinil is direct stimulation of a subtype of alpha1-adrenergic receptor, since alpha1-antagonists can counter some of modafinil's effects.
