Hi Scott,

Pharmaceutical companies frequently 'invent' drug interactions simply because they haven't studied the interaction. This is especially true of MAOIs. Some of the alleged MAOI drug interactions are fantasy, not reality. Because MAOIs have numerous *major* drug interactions, many pharmaceutical companies have chosen to state that their products are contra-indicated with MAOIs, despite the absense of any evidence of an interaction.

I have read than diphenhydramine is a weak monoamine reuptake inhibitor. As a result, I would advise against combining it with MAOIs. There are many alternative antihistamines. None of the newer non-sedating antihistamines interact with MAOIs. Steroid nasal sprays do not interact with MAOIS. In patients being treated with MAOIs, diphenhydramine would not be the most suitable treatment for insomnia. Other meds, such as zolpidem (Ambien) would generally be more appropriate.

WARNING........

Benadryl is used as a brand name for MANY different OTC products, some of which contain decongestants as well as diphenhydramine. Decongestants can cause a hypertensive crisis when administered with an MAOI.
