my *big* problem is that meds have been oversold and no one's been entirely honest about how they work. I read this interview once, for instance, where a psychiatrist was saying that the SSRIs don't really "restore" serotonin levels, which used to be their selling point--rather, they elevate serotonin to unusually high levels, and any "improvement" that's seen during a course of SSRI treatment is really do more to a drug-induced state of artificially high serotonin than it is due to any sort of "restored balance." I believe the "correcting brain chemistry" argument is also what was once used to sell the old antipsychotics, such as Mellaril.
I'm sure meds work for some people, maybe a lot of people, sometimes...its just when people are put on 3,4,5 meds and are deemed "treatment refractory," or whatever, its just not fair to the patient or the public at large.
