> and how long is the anxiolytic effect or valium?hi there...all of this is in the context of prn dosing, not chronic...ativan's onset is quicker but the duration of anxiolytic effects are shorter than valium...given that the goal here is to have a few doses of a med handy to get through a panic attack or a very stressful incident, the duration of each ought to be somewhat irrelevant, in that once the crisis is over, you'd like to return to baseline...that said, valium will last about twice as long in prn dosing than ativan, and is actually a ``heavier''drug in that there is usually some accompanying physical slowing. i would anticipate a couple of hours for ativan and double that of valium, and this is on the assumption that you would take perhaps 1 mg ativan or 5 mg valium.....all the best, chemist
