This is serious stuff--you would be changing the way you metabolize food. I would not do it without discussing it with my doctor first.
A good friend of mine has been on the Atkins Diet, and, yes, she has had success losing weight, but she had to go off of it because it made her hypoglycemic. Then, she had difficulty reestablishing equilibrium and felt lousy for a few days.
Finally, it clearly is not something that is sustainable throughout your life. So it might help you lose the weight initially, but it won't necesarrily be the case that you can keep it off.
Just be careful.
