read any good books lately?

Posted by obsidian on December 13, 2009, at 23:01:53

I have most recently been reading "Love's Executioner" by Yalom

I like his writing. I finally read that "In Session" book last month - it was quite validating.

As mentioned months ago in a previous post, I was reading "The Possessed" (Dostoyevsky) along with a history of the USSR. Slow to start, but in the set pieces, just wonderfully funny. Then I lost it. And then my wife found it under the bed when she was making it (which, I hasten to say, I do not bother to do). I just have to work out whether to start at the beginning again or not.

Well, what I've been reading is not nearly as intellectual as yalls, but I've really been enjoying it. Its "Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse" novels (otherwise known as the Southern Vampire Series). Somebody here actually told me about it a while back, but it took me a while to find them (I was looking at Half Price Books, and they are always sold out there). They have a series now on HBO based on the books called Trueblood. They are awesome!

There's a lot to be said for vampire stories.

They may be easy to read, for one.
On days like today I could read the newspaper, and felt a warm glow of achievement into the afternoon.

Have you seen "Let the Right One In"?

Swedish vamire movie.

I'm trying to read "The Yalom Reader" but am finding it hard to concentrate. I recently enjoyed Georgette Heyer books again, and you might have been able to tell by the fact that my speech took on Regency overtones. Now I'm doing the same with Ellis Peters "Brother Cadfael" series. So if my speech takes on medieval overtones, you'll know why.

Sid and Dinah,

I'm not familiar with Yalom. Thanks for the link.

Finally have a copy of The Feeling Good Handbook. Looks really good.

Started No Country For Old Men. (I try to read at least one book unrelated to mental health!).

Finished Alive Sebold's Lovely Bones (novel) and her non-fiction Lucky (trigger).

Oh yes, and Cod.

TexasChic,

Came across a vampire novelette I read years ago. Very good.

Carmilla, by Le Fanu. Published in 1872 in a collection of tales called "In a Glass Darkly." Immensely readable despite publication date. Female vampire story that sets the bar for many sensual, lesbian-themed vampire tales to come. A great read. And I don't care for vampire stories. http://amzn.com/1840225521

Sigi,

The Possessed was my first Dostoyevsky. So many names and carriage rides back and forth! I adore, ADORE Crime and Punishment. Never finished the Brothers Karamatov.

Have you read TA Hoffman's story "The Sandman"? Came across it the other day as I was cleaning up and thought of you.

At the movie theatre there was a program from the Met of Tales of Hoffman and I assume the TA Hoffman you mention is ETA Hoffman, about whom I know nothing more than that he lived around what is now Germany during the revolutionary times in Europe.

I had a strong reaction to it, both positive and negative. My first thought was Nietzche's.....Europe is drunk on Christianity and alcohol (and in need of feminism and psychological minimalism....something like Taoism). I was wondering while I watched it about European history in the lead up to WWI and why no one bothered to stop it and the relationship of this to the psychological giganticism of the Hoffman character. Also (of course) in that opera there are no good tunes. Having said that, it was an incredibly good and interesting production.

I was listening to some wonderful sacred music last night and the thought came to me that the cultivation of the sacred does not in the west go along with the cultivation of a sense of humour. Dostoevsky managed it though.
