Well Kath, when I'm not on Politics waiting for someone to explain Ann Coulter to me, I'm reading about the polar bears in Churchill.
Never been there?
Maybe Hudsons Bay is a little bleak?
We have a salt lake that's always empty and is mainly a salt pan, and the effect of the reflected sky in the salt and the water (if there is any) means that you cannot determine a horizon.
The description of Hudsons Bay sounded a little like that.

Hudson Bay is due north of you, PJ.
You can hire bikes to ride downhill here....

Ann Coulter defies explanation. It will be a long wait!

You didn't get to see McCain asked if he thought she was 'hot'?
I couldn't find it on youtube.
I just wanted to see his expression.

I rode a bus once on a terrifying road in a developing country. the worst was when driver shifted from 2nd gear to 1st gear in the middle of a switchback and we jerked backwards about 15 feet towards the precipice before the gear caught.
[goosebumps. shudder]
nice pix

Yeah - Hudson's Bay sounds mighty bleak around about now, with all this stupid snow & lack of sun.
That no-horizon thing sounds interesting.
Hope yer well, hugs, Kath

That's because you get too much.
I just love watching snow fall.
If I go to Japan again I shall stay here....

I think snow has something to do with the clear lines of traditional Japanese architecture (and the way they layer their trees).....

Can't view the pages at this point; will try agian. How wonderful to go to Japan.
You're right; snow is beautiful & I love seeing it float gently down in big 'featery clumps' on that type of a snowfall. But yes - ENOUGH. Since November this year!

I don't know how I expected it to fall?
It seemed to fall in slow motion, but then I'd only really seen hail, rain and sleet before.I went walking around here
http://www.yamasa.org/japan/images/matsumotojou_reflect_193.jpg
after it had snowed the night before. There is a park around the castle and all the trees were covered with snow. Very layered effect.

That picture is SO beautiful! It must have been lovely to be there. I cannot even imagine it!
Now, as to how snow falls:
- right now it's not even flakes...it's little dots of snow; like soft pellets; flying sideways - LOTS of them, almost making like a fine curtain
or
- pretty-shaped flakes swirling around anything that is in its way; making little whirlwinds
or
- heavy dry lumps consisting of numerous wonderfully-shaped snowflakes, floating gently down as if the 'gods' were having a pillow-fight & huge feather-pillows had been broken & were spilling their contents down to the earth
or
- heavy wet clumps, so close to each other you can hardly see ahead of you, descending VERY determinedly straight down & becoming inches on the ground in no-time-flat
or
- sparkly crystals catching the sunlight as they float gently down
Anybody have more to add???
Actually, in writing this, I realize that snow is really quite amazing & beautiful!!!

How long were you in Japan? Kath
PS - my friend leaves in a week to spend 6 months teaching in China.
She was there for a year a couple of years ago & loved it so much she's going back.

We were there for 3 weeks, Kath.
Kyoto and central Japan.
Except for architecture, a part of Japan I'd like to see is Hokkaido. I could handle this....

It also falls in one huge, ginormous flake which lands directly on my %$#@!'ing car. This mongo huge flake is about 1 mile across and about 2 feet high. One flake. Seriously. On my car. I dig and dig....my nose drips, my tears freeze, finally my snot freezes. Then another freakin' flake crashes to earth.
Right now there is nothing pretty about snow.

I can relate! Where are you again? I'm north of Toronto, Ontario.
Tonite my husband had to 'crawl' along in traffic due to the "lake effect" of Lake Ontario - lots of snow!
