I got 100 days sober

Posted by cactus on August 1, 2007, at 7:47:37

woo hoo, it's the longest I've been sober for about 20 years and I'm only 37. What a bumpy but thrilling ride. Using alcohol and drugs to mask and self medicate mental illness is just not a good look. I had no idea that I was depressed, anxious and socially phobic at the age of 17. So booze became my best friend and worst nightmare at the same time. I hope anyone else out there doing what I have done can gain some hope and get proactive, there is so much support available, you just have to ask, peace peoples!!!

Fan - freakin - tastic!!

I'll have 2 years' sobriety this month, and I drank for 20 years as well. This place has helped as much as all my other support systems and medication.

Congratulations, again!

Congratulations Cactus and Clear Skies and best wishes for finding your path to having a life and not just an existence. Having gotten sober at 32 and now having just turned 50 last week I can tell you that sobriety isn't just about not drinking or using a drug. The addiction(s) is/are a symptom of the problem(s). For me it was trying to fill a hole in my soul and using alcohol and drugs and various other detrimental activities as a "solution to all my problems". My path led me to AA and believe me I went kicking and screaming. That is until I heard "them" talking about things that I didn't think anybody ever would understand. And I finally understood why I was doing these insane things with no regard to anyone including me. There I began what is an ongoing journey. And it is a journey of hills and valleys not just a straight road. Times I've really wanted to say "I can't do it!" Fortunately my desire and need and courage to change my life are stronger. I could not do it by myself and that was my biggest hurtle; not being self sufficient and all powerful and believing that I was worth being given help and instruction. I could go on and on. Suffice it to say that I hope you find your own path to sanity and love and fulfillment and have guidance from both human and divine teachers.

One day at a time,

Tooter

That's great but why did I feel wonderful function great and always able to not drink more than 4-6 beers nightly . I did this from age l6 till age 50. And I was happy and working? I'm confused does it have to cause problems in your life to not be good? Love Phillipa ps my neighbors are all old and in excellent health happy drink lots of wine daily? Maybe some people do better and don't have addictive problems I don't know?

I post under a different name, but I remember when you quit because I tried too as well, but didn't make it. I wasn't ready, and I was doing it for all the wrong reasons. You have to do it for yourself and no one else. People can support you but they won't hold you hand, it has to come from within and if you ask, the universe shall provide. Another nasty lesson is that booze and psych meds DO NOT MIX. So thankyou for your kind words and wonderful news about your 2 year b'day approaching, yippie for you, that's fantastic

Good job! I'm married to a recovering alcoholic who will have 8 years of sobriety in Sept. He went to AA which for him seemed to work best. But, as they say in AA, don't argue with the method of recovery, so every one will have their own experience.

We have learned since he sobered up that there were many influential biological factors going on that were not recognized and that were contributing factors (big time, I would say) but there are all the other elements that one learns about in AA too - spiritual (and that means different things to different people) is a biggie.

It's a complex picture but well worth working through and you're on the right path. Keep going - one day at a time!
