Kidney stones. ouch.

Posted by Dinah on May 1, 2007, at 7:44:11

Up much of the night the night before last. And the pain killers my old doctor gave me have expired. I'd only taken one of the ten she prescribed. But it was nice to have them on hand.

New doctor's nurse said there was no way he'd prescribe anything for pain if I weren't currently in pain. I understand his reluctance to hand out pain killers, and I explained it needn't be the same pain killer. I explained that it's not like kidney stones give you two days notice so you can politely call for pain pills. Sigh. I guess new doctor thinks that a bit of pain is something you live through.

I think I can feel the darn thing bouncing around in my bladder, waiting to inflict more pain when it leaves. I would appreciate any sonic brain waves sent my way to break that jagged little thing into small pieces before it wends its way down.

This isn't a health question. It's not the first time. I guess it's a "great, now I seem like a drug seeking patient, and I'm still going to also have to enfure pain" post.

Ughhh Dinah, I know how you feel! Kidney stones are the worst, arent they? I've had 2 episodes in the last few years, with 4 lithrotripsys (3x to get one stone!).. one which landed me in the hospital with a major infection. I've been told the pain is as bad as natural child birth. I've never had kids, but I wouldnt doubt it. You definitely have my sympathy.

I hold on to a bottle of percocet from last time I had stones, but like yours, I'm sure it's expired by now. I was at my university health center during an attack once just to get pain killers (already had a urologist appt in 2 days, but couldnt wait it out). The doctor hit my on my back near my kidneys and said, "does this hurt?" No, you think?! I guess you cant understand until you've felt it, but wow.

I've noticed that when I start to feel a stone coming on (little twinges, etc before it really hits), if I drink a LOT of water for a few days, sometimes it never appears. Much more than the 64oz... more like 3x that. Really flood myself. Worth a shot?

Sending some of those stone shattering beams your way. Hope this is just a false alarm.

Most meds have a grace period.

I guess new doctor thinks that a bit of pain is something you live through.

Screw him.

I wouldn't worry about the expiry date. The worst that could happen is that their efficacy is diminished. But if they've been stored in a cool dry location out of the sun, they should have an indefinite life, according to research done by the U.S. military.

I'll do my best. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I hope you can clear the air with the doctor. The nurse's comments may not truly reflect your doctor's position.

Yes use your percocet if that's the one and call back today you need to get it ultrasounded or x-rayed to see how large the stone is and don't forget to strain you urine to see if they pass. Good luck. Love Phillipa

OUCH Dinah,

my son has had them various times & once the nurse said that she's had them AND babies & the stones were more painful!

Guess what. There's a herb called Chanca Piedra. It works! You see sand type stuff in your pee & I know various people who've been helped by it. One man tends to take it for a week every weeks or so preventively.

Also I've read that lemon juice ongoing is a good preventative.

hope you feel better soon. luv, Kath

And ((((Bobby's urinary tract))))

I hope your next kidney stone is years and years away. (Unless of course, it's already started to wend its way, in which case may it swiftly exit.)

So far so good, and thank you

A special thanks for the info about the painkillers. I will definitely take one if the next stage of the journey is as bad as the first, or if one strikes again.

I sure hope the nurse isn't correctly representing the doctor. I'll be happy to show him my vial of unused pills (unless he takes them away from me). No power on earth would get me to go to an ER for pain, what with my emetophobia. I would pretty much have to be unconscious.

I'll try to be more conscientious about preventative measures, and thanks for the new ideas on that. I wish I didn't hate water so.

It's right up there with most painful moments. I didn't make it to natural childbirth, so I have no comparison there. But it ranks up there with my two worst headaches and wisdom tooth removal.

I think they might be working! Yesterday it wasn't hurting, but I could tell where it was. Today it isn't hurting and I can't tell where it is.

I'm doing lots of visualizatons of sandstone boulders falling in the sea and dissolving. :)

I also have been sending get well vibes your way, I just don't always respond to the posts personally as well as mentally. I know kidney stones are supposed to be the worst pain ever, so I do commiserate. I hope you pass them soon.

He said that no, it wasn't his position to only prescribe pills during pain, so he happily wrote me a prescription for Tylenol 3, which worked nicely after my C section. Now I have to figure out how to dispose of the stuff that's expired.

He ran all sorts of blood tests that he didn't tell me about and I only found out about when the lab called me to come back and give more blood. Which is good I guess. Kidney tests and calcium and magnesium tests.

Everything seems quiet. I could swear I can feel the vibrations you've kindly sent (and I'm sending too) from time to time, but that might be my iPod.

Great. A nice doctor. He must be worth his weight in gold--

I'm glad he gave you something. Some doctors don't seem to know that pain is only useful in quite narrow circumstances-- and that, beyond that-- it should be forced into retreat-- by the most effective means.

I'm a big fan of Tylenol 3, when the situations warrants.

Thank heavens for Nice Doctors. It's great to have the pain relief at hand if you require it.
My brain zaps towards your brain has a built in filter to catch any stones. It does help to refine the good vibes we send to one another.

here's to leaving straining to gravy!!
