my last winter whine...I promise, but.....

....it's gonna be a windchill of -35 tonight (-31 in American). Ferfriggsake, I've had sunburns at this time of year; it's the same sun intensity as the first week of October.

Is that um, °C as in celsius? Um, -35°C does seem abit chilly. Well, actually yesterday it was a whole +3°C and, man that felt tropical! It was like 'oh I don't have to cover all my exposed flesh!' and 'wow, I don't have to wear longjohns (you know, leggings undernearth your trousers)'. The sun actually felt warm when it shone on your face!!

So all in all, I think this lovely tropical trend is set to continue for us! Although we do tend to have less extreme and more consistent weather that you folks on the North American Continent.

Yes. I was trying to be cheeky with the Celcius/Fahrenheit temps. AFAIK, the U.S. is the only place still using Fahrenheit, and other non-metric scalars.

> Um, -35°C does seem abit chilly.

They updated the forecast to -38 before I went to bed. It's back up to -35 as we speak.

That's what I meant about the October sun parallel thingy. If the airmasses weren't so chilled right now, it would be glorious out.

Thanks, of course, to all that American heat exported via the Gulf Stream.

You know, North American weather is really the most extreme on Earth. I think it all stems from having the heat reservoir of the Gulf of Mexico, but I'm just speculating. Anyway, lucky us.

Maybe 50's in NC? I know it sounds warm but it's a damp temp so feels colder. Love Phillipa

Actually, in the UK they still have all the road signs in miles, can you believe it? We're supposed to be all metric and what with the EU and everything, we really should get round to switching them to km. I mean, even Ireland was road signs in km!!! Its bizarre. Everything else is totally metric, but no, road signs, still miles.

> Thanks, of course, to all that American heat exported via the Gulf Stream.

But is it not part Mexican too? Maybe even Caribbean? I imagine these little Mexican air/water molecules bobbing along, all trying to migrate to Europe. 'Hula l'europa!' Well, whatever, I am rather grateful we have it. Lets hope it doesn't shut down anytime soon....

> You know, North American weather is really the most extreme on Earth.

Yes it does seem very volatile, what with ice storms and tornados and things like that.

Lar, I'll send you some warmth from Canada's southernmost province - Florida.

It's a beautiful, sunny day, and spring training baseball games have begun. It's going to be all right.

({({Lar)})} that's a fleece-lined hug.

That's bizarre! Surely speedometers and odometers are in kilometres?

BTW, we almost hit the intersection of the two temp scales last night. -40 is -40 in both languages.

I just went to get the mail, and my nose hurt to breathe through. Mouth breathing hurt my lungs, though, and they still hurt. A week from now, the forecast is for +13 (55 F.). It's really hard on the body to do these shifts in temp.

I meant America in the geographical sense, the Americas. I keep forgetting that my neighbours to the south have appropriated the term for themselves. I'll try to keep my mouth shut about the World Series of baseball.....

One theory is that desalination of Arctic water due to icemelt could shut it down, leading to a new Ice Age. I know, theories abound, but if this one is correct, there is no transition period. It's a binary system.

Yes. The temperature ranges, and the frequencies of extreme weather events, are unlike anywhere else.

Our speedometers are in miles, with the km's as an afterthought written faintly on the dial in red.
We cling proudly to miles, feet, pounds and ounces and anything archaic it seems. I'm not complaining, I like it that way. I would hate to have Euros as a currency. My Mum, who's only 56 still says things like " How much? Thats about 30 shillings in old money you know!" And we still talk about distances in yards.
I guess our kids are being taught metric in school, so eventually it'll all be metric.

I still tend to think & talk about a lot of things in inches, yards, miles, etc. And in temperatures, I tend to think of winter temperatures in Celcius & Spring & Summer in F. or in both!

I know, I know, wink wink nod nod, thats what I was referring to! Its happened in the past, its gonna happen in the future....Mister Heinrich Event gave us that one!

I wish everything were wholly metric. It'd be much simpler that way! Anyway it is the language de facto of the scientific and medical communties, is it not? And which we are part of (hehe, well I'm part of the science one anyway).

Anyway.

No we don't, at least not me anyway! And most of my friends, we mostly do metric!

I feel quite ashamed of the UK actually. I mean, look at Ireland, its progressing leaps and bounds - they were one of the first places to ban smoking in indoor places (after, I think, NYC) and they have the Euro, and they have banned plastic carrier bags and all the road signs are in km!!!

>I would hate to have Euros as a currency.

Why? I love Euros!!!!! I live in a EuroZone country and its great. Its practically the same as sterling anyway!

Maybe it's my age, I just like to stick to what I know! Bit of a traditionalist I guess!

At least we are moving in the right direction with the smoking thing, all restaurants are non smoking now, and bars that serve food are or are soon to be non smoking.
