wedding/engagement rings: which finger/ hand?

Posted by saturn on May 20, 2006, at 18:03:27

Can someone clarify this for me please?

I know if a man or woman is wearing a ring on their ring finger, left hand, this means they're engaged or married.

After that I get confused. Do rings on the right hand mean anything?

I often see women with rings on their middle or even index finger (left hand). Do these mean anything? Pinky? Do woman wear rings on other fingers to communicate they're not married but unavailable?

And does a married woman wear 2 rings on her finger--an engagement and wedding?

I get confused!

As far as I know, the only ring-finger that means anything is the left-hand "ring finger" next to the baby finger. Women who have an engagement ring and wedding ring wear them both on that finger generally. Men who have a wedding ring wear it on that finger also.

To confuse the issue, I think that in Europe it's the right-hand "ring finger" where the wedding ring is worn.

During my wedding ceremony, when it was my turn to put the ring on my husband's finger, he didn't hold his hand out, so I took his hand & put the ring on it. Turned out - & we didn't realize it until outside afterwards when photos were being taken - that I put it on his right hand!! Someone asked "Oh - so are you using the right-hand ring finger as they do in Europe?" I was mortified & took the ring off that finger & put it on the "proper" one!!!!!!!!

These days people wear rings on any finger - thumbs & toes also.

:-) Kath

Yes that's correct about European men wearing the wedding ring on the right hand I was married to one. Made him wear on the left though. I wear rings on almost all my fingers just like them. I wear four on my wedding finger wedding band, engagement ring l year aniversay ring and one with emeralds and diamonds thats the only finger it fits. Not to offend anyone don't gay men wear a wedding band on the right hand too? Love Phillip

Sometimes women who are widows will wear a wedding ring or wedding ring set on their RIGHT ring finger. Especially if they have children. This sort of signals that they are not married and "available" but are still thinking fondly of another.

Why would that question be offensive?

And are you asking if gay men wear a band on their right hands to indicate they are gay? Or that they are committed to a partner who gave them the ring?

hey there,

well I live in europe (the UK) and people who are married wear their wedding ring on their LEFT hand. So I don't know where you got that idea from!
Actually I just asked my mother and she says that in Germany and Finland at least (she's been married to both a german ,and a Finn!) its on the right hand. But here in the UK its the left.

And I have a lesbian friend and she said that some lesbians have taken to wearing a ring on their pinky to indicate that they are lesbian to others.

Oh and most people here wear their engagement and wedding rings together.

Hope this has been some insight...

Kind regards

Meri

I think it's a tradition in Russia to wear the wedding ring on the right hand.

Yeah, Europe is pretty diverse. Well, ,maybe not as diverse as say, China is to the USA. Just look at Eurovision!!!! LOL!!!

But I have noticed that in the UK and Ireland we tend to do things differently from the rest of Europe - for instance we drive on the left, in Europe its on the right. People in Britain tend to have carpets (even in the bathroom - eek!) whereas the rest of Europe is wooden floors/tiles. Things like that. Maybe its because we're an island????

My mom had carpet put in the KITCHEN! of our old house. I hated it, and she regretted it, because you can't clean it the way you can the kitchen floor. Crumbs ground in, spills, etc. Bleah.

And I don't like carpeting in the bathroom due to the potential for mildew forming in it or the padding underneath. I prefer throw rugs that I can wash when needed and so I can get to the floor to mop it.

LOL, I sound like I do a lot of cleaning. Snort!

PS: Mike, I hope you got the info you were looking for. Sorry to change the subject...

hey there,

what I meant was floor to floor thick pile carpets in bathrooms. Over the whole floor space.

Now obviously in a bathroom a separate mat is good for when you have just got out of the shower/bath - but these are just throw mats and can easily be washed.

My mother in her house in Finland has underfloor heating in her bathroom - makes the tiles really nice and warm!!

Yeah, when I was a student science teacher we lived in a house with carpet in the kitchein (and bathroom!) Gross! Although it wasn't very thick, but still it was gross.

What do folks have in America? Tiles?

I think it might depend on the part of the country and the year the house was built or updated.

I don't really care much for carpets, and again that may have to do with living in a hot humid environment. Ever since I went to see my vet once and he was clearly distressed. When I asked what was wrong he said he had just lost a litter of pups to what he called "carpet syndrome". Apparently the carpeting had a fungus or something that the tiny pups couldn't handle. He said it wasn't unusual to have respiratory problems with carpets. We also had a neighbor with allergies and a strong love of carpets who even with cleaning had to change out the carpets every few years.

But then again we live in one of the most humid places in the US so that may have something to do with the carpet problem here. It may be no problem elsewhere.

I prefer something I can mop, preferably with Lysol or bleach (but never together of course). Of course cold toes are also rarely a problem here. :)

Yes!! I think there is big incidence of carpets and allergies. Apparently the UK has the world's highest incidence of asthma and the UK must be the most carpeted country in the world. I reckon there must be a link between the two.

Anyone know anymore about carpets and asmtha? FRortunately I'm not allergic to anything so I'm not really in the know about allergies and asmatha and things like that. I'm not even sure if asmatha is classed as an allergy and I can't spell it!
