oh boy....missouri...are you kidding?:)

Posted by alesta on April 11, 2006, at 14:15:42

hi folks! i'm exhausted and iron-deficient, so i guess i'll try and get right to the point..uh, my bf officially enlisted in the army yesterday (active duty) to be a combat engineer...in 2 weeks, he, well, we, are going to missouri, where his basic and AIT training are....he will be in training for a full year! i just know his @ss is gonna be sent to iraq...that he will be exposed to danger. and i won't see him for about 11 weeks initially! i have to find a job in missouri and everything...man. me..a country girl? it'll be like that guy in footloose going to live in the midwest with his loud music and leather jacket..sticking out like a sore thumb.:) i don't know what to think right now...he says he is doing this for us.

and are there any decent jobs in missouri??? anyone have any leads for me...i still don't have a car...not sure how i'd even get to a job w/out bus system..does anyone know anything about midwest/missouri or have any advice or anything??

thanks much, y'all, :-)
amy

p.s. if this war ever ends, we might actually end up in europe..he is putting in for germany and italy..weehew!:)

p.p.s. also, i wanted to go back to school...how long do you have to live in a particular state before you qualify for financial aid?

hiya.

i'm not sure where you are now, but if it's anything like where i'm from, the midwest was a big culture shock.

i don't know what you're trained to do, so i can't speak for jobs but i once had a job interview in MO for a chemist position. didn't get an offer, but i guess it proves there *are* skilled jobs out there.

the one thing i'll say about the midwest is that the cost of living is way low. so that's helpful. but unless you're in a metropolis like KC or something, you NEED a car.

the state residency thing varies by state. and really, you can get finaid regardless of residency status, depending on the school, but tuition might be higher so the finaid might not go as far until you get that residency. stafford loans are a beautiful thing. :)

anyhow, good luck moving. hopefully you won't be too far away from a "real" city ;)

hi alesta,

wow - that's a lot of exciting changes coming up for the both of you.

Well, I live just outside St. Louis, and have lived somewhere in the midwest for 13 years of my adult life (I'm 46) I like it very much. People are nice and would do anything for you. And I was born and raised in New England, and have also spent quite a few year in southern California and also lived in the south. Military life took me all over, I guess :-) This may be my favorite place.

Really, it's all about how you look at it, I think. Like an interesting, new adventure, or like a scary, weird place....ya' know? But ghost's right, there can sure be some culture shock if you go from city right to rural...but you *might* like it.

What general type of work are you looking for?

Do you want to say what part of the state you'll be in? Makes a big difference. If not here, you can Babblemail me, if you want. But I can mostly speak for the greater St. Louis area, not the western/northern parts of MO.

Let me know if I can help somehow and I'll sure try. -- 10derHeart

I was born and raised in Missouri.....We're not all toothless drunken hillbillies. (well yeah, I am, but ther are lots of other pretty nice folks 'round these parts) It depends what part of the state you're in(like most places) The only armed forces type establishment I'm aware of is Whitman Air Force Base in Knobnoster...that's right, I said Knobnoster (could be worse...like the towns of Pittsville and Peculiar)...It's a fairly rural area...but close to a couple of college towns and only about 45 minutes from Kansas City. I grew up in KC. I have traveled to a whole bunch of other places, and as cities go, Kansas City is a really decent place to live. Still has a small town feel, but with big city attractions. As far as the job market, I think we're a little better off than the rest of the country. No, I don't work for the Missouri Tourism Bureau, but if you have any questions (about Missouri....or the meaning of life...etc.) I'll be happy to tell you what I know.

Have a perfect day!!

Peace
kid

Although being retired AF I wouldn't know for certain, I'd take an educated guess the type of training alesta mentioned might be done at Ft. Leonard Wood, over in south central MO...I think the nearby community is St. Robert. It's in the Ozarks and is a base that does a lot of basic army training courses, etc. I used to deal with the small AF units that are located their to support the Army's mission quite often when I was still on AD.

Unlikely any AIT (infantry, I'm pretty sure) would be done at Whiteman as it's an Air Force base, as you said :-)

And I really need to get over and visit KC one day. So close, yet I've not made the trip yet. I think the same about St. Louis - it has the smallest town feel of any major city I've ever lived near or visited, and that's been a good many....

and you know, I'm STILL - after living just a few miles across the river from MO for over 4 years - waiting to meet a toothless, drunken hillbilly!! Dang, just can't find one! Maybe I'll have the pleasure one day, kid.... ;-)

Peace from a fan of the Show Me state,

hi guys...change of scenario..it turns out my bf needs 3 more college credits in order to be in army...so his contract is null and void...i don't understand exactly why he needs a college course to be in the army...makes no sense to me..my bf says it has something to do with his getting the ged recently..i dunno. anyways....i told him that maybe this was a sign lol (now that he is not obligated to be in the army). i also reinterated to him that if he goes in the army we might be separated for years due to his prolonged training and probability of going to iraq. he said "i'm not going to iraq." i don't know why he doesn't get that probable possiblity. i suppose he doesn't want to. (also, he could be sent to afghanistan.)

i have been having a really rough go of it this past week with him...so i don't really care anymore anyways if he goes in. you know what i hate...when i'm doing "ok" i always smile at other ppl to try and lift them up...but when i'm sad...nobody does that for me. sorry....i just don't get that...you can change someone's day/week (i've seen it happen) but then they don't give a da*n about you. bloody hell.:)

thanks you guys for the missouri info....probably won't need it now cause i know he's going to change his MOS to the computer field...but very interesting comments. i *so* appreciate it! (and was quite surprised to find that kid and tender live in missouri...huh!:-))

love,:)

Grew up in western Mass, near Springfield, small towns - most of my relatives are still there.... My dad retired from UMass - computer programmer there for about 20 years :-) I only know the Hartford part of CT and then only a bit around the airport.
What part is Greenwich in....I'm too lazy to look it up ;-)
