How Many People Talk to Themself?

Just wondering how many of you have dialogues with yourselves either out loud or in your head. Are we constantly thinking? Fondly, Phillipa

Sure. But I like to be surrounded by dogs so I can pretend I'm talking to them. :)

I haven't always, but I've realized I started doing it in the last few years. I seem to do it alot while shopping. I've caught people looking at me.

Yep. Quite a lot. I argue with myself too :-)

> Are we constantly thinking?

If by thinking you mean 'cognition' (which includes perceptions and mental pictures as well) then we are thinking unless we are unconscious (in a dreamless sleep).

But even then... There is unconscious 'cognition' (mental processing) going on...

I catch myself doing that often..lol especially when I'm pissed off I'll realize I'm ranting or if I've done something pretty dumb which is a LOT! ;-)

I used to dialogue with my fake friend in my head (no one in particular just some part of me I guess) It used to be almost CONSTANT, about EVERYTHING, it was REALLY annoying, but thanks to therapy not so much anymore :-)

Do you do it in the shower more or when blow drying your hair? I have so many things going on I'm tired by the time I'm done. Ready to go back to bed. Fondly, Phillipa

I used to have fake dialogues with an imaginary psychiatrist. I did this as a child, for years! It's pretty funny looking back. Some kids have an imaginary friend, I had an imaginary psychiatrist.

yeah...mine was sort of like a counselor, like a wish for someone I could talk to, who would listen to me, and care about me

gosh...that sounds so sad doesn't it?
I guess we sometimes have to create what we don't have. It was "company" anyway.

Yes, that's exactly what it was! He understood me so well. And I sounded so interesting when I talked to him.

Yup, it's sad. But it also strikes me funny somehow. What a geeky kid I was. But now I know I wasn't the only kid on earth with an imaginary therapist. Thanks, sleepygirl!

I have a song or a snippet of a song going in my head all the time. Literally all the time. The only time it stops is when I'm actively listening to music. I'm a huge record collector and radio listener so I know so many songs. I also have a voice going all the time. I think the song keeps the voice from arguing with itself.

The talking can work me up to violent feelings if I don't pay attention. Visuals are scarier though. Stopping drinking like now, can make it more noticable or intrusive. I wonder why I've never mentioned this to pdoc or therapist?

I also talk out loud when I'm working, or sing, but that feels more normal. One time I was singing to myself quietly at the store, and we were expecting a visit from the district manager. My friend/supervisor thought I was talking to myself and she was scared I was having an angry day. And I had to reassure her. This is funnier than it sounds.

I have this problem too. I think its an OCD thing. Some people repeat numbers, we repeat snippets of songs. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I also have the 'imaginary friend' I talk to, but I always imagine her as a particular old friend from high school that I haven't talked to in years. I mainly do it while I'm driving. Its like I'm explaining where I'm driving, what I'm going to do, ect. I've alway felt a little crazy about it. I always think I'll have to tell her about it next time I see her. She knows I'm crazy already, so that's okay.

I've just kinda of always had a voice in my head that talks to me, or I talk to it. But I do talk to myself outloud quite a bit. I use to find myself doing it all the time when I was doing math or chem. Now I do it while I'm reading text books to keep myself awake
