I hope they never luminol my house

Posted by Dinah on May 5, 2005, at 20:15:37

My largest dog (medium sized really) is prone to nose bleeds. The vet doesn't really see any particular reason for them.

But on her worst days the house looks like a particularly gruesome crime scene. One sneeze and...

I've just worn myself out cleaning up, and my husband did part of it.

If there's ever any reason to suspect a crime in the house, the evidence will be overwhelming.

I love it! Your house would flunk for sure. The things we put up with for our beloved dogs...ours is now SIX, and when she's angry at us (usually for not paying enough attention to her, and her infinite needs, when we are especially busy), she still wets the living room rug. We just put up with it, because we love how beautiful and silky she is (she's a springer), how full of life and vitality, and how snuggly and loving she is whenever she gets a chance. I also do find that, after one of those horribly painful sessions with my analyst, nothing is more comforting that to be licked all over my face and then feel her slim, silky liver and white body snuggle close to my legs.

Oooh, don't even mention that.

I am the worst house trainer ever. The two big dogs are fine. They're much easier to potty train. But the little ones!!!

The blind deaf dog probably has the least accidents because she sleeps so much that whenever she starts to move I pick her up and race her to the paper.

That leaves three very small dogs (less than five pounds each). And I swear it seems like I am constantly picking up after them. They must have bladders the size of Lake Michigan. We keep the Lysol wipe people in business just by ourselves. :(

I keep saying that the next time we go on vacation, I'll get a real dog trainer to stay here and have them all trained by the time I get back.

(And yes, I know all about crating.)

Don't worry, dog DNA is easily distinguishable form human DNA (which has lots Alu repeats). :-P

wow now there's a new one for me, i've never heard of doggie nosebleeds. it does sound like one of those Halloween movie sets.

my youngest dog and only male has started lifting his leg in the house and peeing everywhere. He'll be two in august and is housebroken...i just don't understand this behavior? he started about a month ago.

Marking?
When he pees is it just a little bit or is he really emptying his bladder?
Cleaning it up with a solution of baking soda and water removes the smell so that animals can't smell it (as opposed to cleaning it up so that people can't smell it).
That can be the trick where cats are marking over other cats over and over...

sometimes he leaves lake louise on the floor and other times it's just a dribble. The other dog is female and she goes outside like a normal dog. So what/who would he be marking for? And he very rarely hits the same spot twice. If a sweater is hanging on the back of a chair and the sleeve is near the floor...you got it. if the bedspread corner has slipped to the floor during the course of sleep, that means its close enough to the floor to lift his little leg on it. A plastic trash bag left on the floor for a moment on its way out to the trash bin...took a hit. I've been trying to keep objects off the floor that he could be tempted by.

i had heard something about males dogs and why you should go with a female. But for the life of me i couldn't remember what that was when we bought gus. now i'm wondering if it wasnt't the whole lifting the leg in the house thing. oi.

Hmm.
Is he neutered?
Sometimes that can solve that problem.
Othertimes not.

I had a male dog once.
He peed on me one day.
I was so suprised and a lot mad.
I was sitting on the ground and he peed on my back.
I wondered what it was...
Yuk!
But we were outside,
And he never did that again..

If he's not neutered, neutering might work since he's been doing it such a short period of time.

Otherwise ask me about doggie diapers. My little macho Harry had to wear them all the time.

yep, he's neutered...we heard that would calm him down. Apparently it hasn't in that dept.

if i could only catch him in the act, otherwise it does no godd. But he's too dang sly. It's good think he's so darn cute.

With me in dark clothes since I'm heading to therapy after.

So now they can do the car too. :)

I'm going to tell them to keep her and find out what's wrong this time. It should be readily apparent at the moment.

Ok. So I have been thinking and thinking and thinking about this...

I used to do a lot of dog obedience / agility and was interested in animal psychology - especially with respect to dogs.

I had a chat with one of my friends.

Maybe it is a dominance thing.
Does he tend to mark things that smell of people?
Maybe that is it.
Do you have problems with dominance with other things?
Does he growl if you take food off him?
Does he stand over you (if you are lying or sitting down does he try to get his head / shoulder above you?
If you were to lye him down and roll him onto his back and hold him there with your hand around his muzzle and one on his chest would he submit or struggle to get up?

> Ok. So I have been thinking and thinking and thinking about this...

you are too cute...thanks for spending the time

> Maybe it is a dominance thing.
> Does he tend to mark things that smell of people?

hmmm, no, it can be the vacuum cleaner, a new bedspread corner hanging down, table leg, anything left on the floor that looks like it might be a good place to lift a leg. most don't smell of anybody.

> Do you have problems with dominance with other things?

no problem with taking food away or dominance. He is second banana to the older female dog. She dominates him but the humans in the house don't have any issues with him that way. He sleeps on the back of the sofa which is above human shoulder height but doesn't seem to be 'funny' about being up there.

> If you were to lye him down and roll him onto his back and hold him there with your hand around his muzzle and one on his chest would he submit or struggle to get up?

he has reacted both ways depending on if he wants to play or snuggle.

alex you are so sweet to take the time to talk about this with me. thank you (((alex)))

They scoped her nose and found nothing to account for it. They sent her home with antibiotics. If that doesn't clear it up, there's more (expensive) tests they can do.

She's just been miserable, though. We had her shaved down recently because she couldn't go outside for more than a couple of minutes without overheating. It was probably a mistake, though. She just follows me around and curls up in a very tight ball and shakes.

Sigh. We've got quite a crew.

One that's blind and deaf. One that has a bad heart but no symptoms yet. One that seizures and is on phenobarbital. One with a bad heart who collapses when she gets overexcited in this absolutely dead sort of immobility, then is ok a few seconds later. The one with the nosebleeds and the neuroses. And one healthy young one that I gave to my son.

I get calm calls from my husband and son all the time. Mooooommmmmm, X's collapsed in a heap. or Moooooommmmmm, Y's falling over. Or Moooooommmmmm, Z's bleeding all over the place. Yech.

The blind deaf dog seems healthy and happy though. Every day is an exciting challenge to her as she maneuvers from her bed to the food and water, occasionally finds her mommy (me), and every once in a while even wanders to where she's supposed to go to the bathroom. She's so happy all the time because she's just accomplished something.

I wonder if that's the key to happiness.

BTW, I really don't mind special needs dogs. In fact, I volunteered for the last two. They're just as sweet as any of the others. I'm not complaining, just smiling. Except maybe about the blood.
