Do you listen to specific CDs when depressed?

Posted by Angel Girl on January 25, 2005, at 8:52:55

I do. I always seem to gravitate to the same CD. Sarah McLachlan's "Solace". I'm not sure if it helps me to feel better or if I can relate the words to how I am feeling or both or none. I just know that every time I sink a little lower, that is the only CD that I will want to listen to. No other will do until I start to feel not so depressed again.

How 'bout you?

oooh, this is a good topic!

For me, it's not so much whole CDs I will pop in when I am depressed, but specific songs.

Examples:

"This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush. "I know you have a little life in you yet, I know you have a lot of strength left. I know you have a little life in you yet, I know you have a lot of strength left." This song has been remade by Seal but the Kate Bush version is better.

"Beautiful Day" by U2, we've probably all heard that one. "I know I'm not a hopeless case; What you don't have you don't need it now."

"Wallflower" by Peter Gabriel. "Hold on, hold on/They put you in a box so you can't get heard/Let your spirit stay unbroken, may you not be deterred/Hold on, you have gambled with your own life/And you face the night alone/While the builders of the cages/Sleep with bullets, bars and stone/They do not see your road to freedom/That you build with flesh and bone/Though you may disappear, you're not forgotten here/And I will say to you, I will do what I can do/You may disappear, you're not forgotten here/And I will say you you, I will do what I can do"

Oh, I just remembered there is an entire CD that I listen to when depressed: "LIttle Earthquakes" by Tori Amos. Especially "Silent All These Years."

Also some Christian songs, but this isn't the faith board and most people probably haven't heard of them.

"In the Light" by Led Zeppelin.

Oh yeah, anything by Aretha Franklin.

The Christian songs, if anyone is interested, are "Sunny Day" and "Needful Hands" by Jars of Clay.

I will have to give them all a listen. I'll download them. They all sound very good. BTW, I know of Jars Of Clay. ;)

during my worst depression when i was 17 i played Dido over and over again, driving my roommate crazy. now i can't listen to it without crying. it just takes my guts and twists them. i feel stone cold when i hear her on the radio. it reminds me too much of that time, my senior year of high school.

I am the biggest, most ardent fan of Sarah Brightman and have all her material but sadly have not been able to listen to it much or sing it (my passion) when depressed.

When I was deeply depressed last year, I listened a lot to Josh Groban. Then when my depression turned very dark at the end of last year, I could not get enough of Evannescance. Not the most appropriate music to listen to being suicidal because that is the theme of some songs.

Paradoxically, it comforted me.

I listen to alot of Loreena McKennitt, a singer of Celtic Music, probably more so when I'm depressed.

I can relate to the comfort of Evanescence. It's just about all I listen to right now.
