Other Supportive Web sites

Posted by TofuEmmy on June 22, 2004, at 9:41:33

I wonder if people have found other web sites which they have found to be supportive? If so, could you post them here?

It's nice to know there are options when things get uncomfortable here.

Some folks use John Grohol's forums. If you google you should be able to find it. He's a therapist rather than an MD I think. Discussion topics are similar, but the admin is done differently. Personally I like it better here, but some former babblers have found it more to their tastes.

In what way is it done differently there?

This discussion is fascinating.
I would love an alternate site too.
Tabitha, what did you like and not like and why?

My ex-hubby designs websites, so I asked him to look at both sites with me for a few minutes. (Of course, now I have to cook him a dinner.) His strong opinion was that, the Grohol site wins hands down for features and ease-of-use. Some features I liked:

1) built in mail system so you can send private mail to any user

2) you can easily search for all posts by a specific user by clicking on their name

3) there are multiple "moderators" around to help, whenever I've been on there seems to be one signed. (you can opt to display if you are signed on)

4) it has its own internal chat room and it looks like you can set up private chat rooms, but I'm not sure. The chat room seems to empty out early tho - must be a lot of east coast people there.

5) As far as admin difference, this is from the FAQ, I edited out the ones that are obvious or the same as babble:
----------------------------------
"This is, first and foremost, a self-help support community. That means if your post isn't about offering support to another person or asking for it, it's potentially not appropriate for the forums. Specifically prohibited from the forums:
..Advertisements of any sort (except to the Classifieds forum)
..Announcements for research projects
..Flames or messages meant to intimidate or harass others [i guess this is like babble?]
..Messages containing suicidal threats or suicidal actions
..Politics and religion, as people usually hold pretty strong opinions about these topics
..All posts with potentially triggering material (e.g., abuse, self-injury, etc.), should be flagged with the Trigger icon. Failure to use this icon when posting such material could result in such material being summarily deleted without notice.

When in doubt about appropriate content, contact any moderator before posting questionable material. "
-----------------------
Some of the above would not be liked by some members of Babble, so the site would not be appropriate for them.

Because of the population on that site, there is limited psych meds knowledge. Some of you know Cam - he used to run their meds board. It states there that for personal reasons he is no longer able to do that. So, that's one area that the site lacks. Anyhow, that's the summary from me and the ex.

But, of course, PsychCentral is missing the one important ingrediant!!! BABBLERS! No website would be any good without them. :-)

I've not been there for a while, but when I popped in, I was mainly using Social here, and the Social board there was kinda, oh I don't know, short on topic and long on shout-outs and cyber-hugs. And folks had signatures in their posts, plus little GIF animations in their signatures, and avatars, many of them animated, so the whole page was like 90% fluff and 10% content. I found it hard to read. I like the minimalist, text-only format here better.

I guess what I liked was the board was free of controversy, because the admin stuff was hidden. All the energy we divert here into admin arguments just wasn't visible there. But then again, I realized that made it a little dull, too. No drama. Sometimes I need a little drama.
