Confessions of a sugar addict...

Posted by Wildflower on November 14, 2003, at 15:10:22

Warning: The following message is a mini-rant that is the end result of a sugar binge.

I've been trying so hard all week to eat healthier and cut out many of the sugar and carbs that are so readily available. (I work right next to a cafe and the fumes from the grille waft into my cube and tempt me everyday.) It was going so well and then one of my ever-supportive co-workers (yeah, right) brought in a vat of chocolate goodies for her desk. Oh the temptation!

I resisted for a while and then she left for the day and I went completly overboard. Snickers, Twix bars and Milky Ways all found their way into my greedy little hands...and then into my mouth. Although my chocolate meal was quite tasty, I'm sooo disappointed with myself.

Ugh! Why can't they invent a magical pill that helps with willpower? ;-) It's pretty apparent that I have none.

Maybe someone can invent a car similar to KITT in the old Knight Rider episodes that would drive me home and not allow me to stop and pickup more scrumptious delights...

OK, my mini-rant is over but my sugar craving is not... Any suggestions to keep me away from my temptations?

I have the same problem as you. Sometimes I even wake up in the middle of the night for ice cream or cookies - I know that is very bad. I will look for suggestions too. When it comes to sugar I have no willpower- I can't eat 1 cookie - I eat 10! I can relate Wildflower - you are not alone.
I find I am better if I have none because once I eat some I can't stop

If you don't already, take chromium picolinate, cheaply avaiable anyplace. It helps stabilize blood sugar. Perhaps on the horizon in a few years, research with the hormone leptin shows great promise for reducing sugar cravings. Leptin, you may have read about it. Fatties have less of it than slimmies; it helps to control appetite.

Also, consider eating fruit instead of sweets, especially apples, they have a low glycemic index. Find a glycemic index chart (surely on the web), and try to eat foods with a low glycemic index to keep your blood sugar stailized to avoid sugar cravings.

Sorry about your co-workers sabotaging your diet. I'm such a nutcase that I got on S.S. disability, so I no longer have that problem, at least for now, I don't have to work. Yeah, the women where I used to work were always bringing in all kinds of fragrant goodies. They were just trying to be sweet, with their sweets, of course, but as a result of that, about the only way I could sucessfully diet was to take vacation time! Good luck to you.

Hi Wildflower,

I had major sugar cravings caused by meds, so I feel your pain. What helped me was sucking on hard candies. They are fat free and rootbeer barrels, etc. taste pretty good. It gave me the sugar fix without packing on the pounds. Chewing sugar free bubblegum also helped me keep away from candy bars.

It's hard when co-workers are diet sabotagers. I just bought a bag of M&Ms from someone who's kid is selling them for school. She keeps them right on her desk for all to drool over. I am telling myself my purchase helps her kid, but I know it's because I needed a candy fix.

I find that I crave sugar when I am feeling lethargic (which is often). I keep hoping that it will give me energy. But it doesn't. It just makes me fat. Knowing that it won't help doesn't keep me from trying every time.

I'd rather be fat and "happy" than depressed and skinny.

No, Li'l Jimi, that wouldn't be me. I got my name after a scathingly vicious flame war at a chat room that no longer exists (and which shall remain nameless, as I'd rather be know for my wit than my ire). I don't like to brag about how good I am at flaming; I'm a nice guy, it's not something that I WANT to do, but sometimes my fellow males can be territorial, you know like BABOONS. Anyway, I like the name because it's campy and silly. I'm not trying to be a badass.

Not sure if this helps much, but I tend to carry a toothbrush with me for this occassion. So, when I see sweets I brush my teeth and it makes me not want to eat them. This only works sometimes. Well, it doesn't really work much. But, at least I don't get cavities. Maybe you should just ignore this one. Karen

Well, I suppose it goes without saying that anyone who likes sweets, and wants to satisfy that craving sans calories, often reaches for aspartame diet soda. It makes me uneasy. I drink it, yah, but there are some people on the web who think aspartame is a slow but deadly poison, and they're not necessarily conspiracy yahoos, either. The trick of it is, human health in the modern age is gradually getting better, due to technological advances; but an advancement in the general level of health, may be partially (but significantly) cancelled out by an INSULT to our health which is ALSO a result of modern technology. I'm SOOOO confused! Some of the villifyers of aspartame seem to have a knowledge (a least sufficent unto the cause of fooling MY ignorant ass) of biochemistry, that I lack. At the same time, though unlikely, it's possible that a large corporation like Searle could quite literally buy off enough politicians to get away, almost literally, with murder.

sometimes a glass of chilled water helps. It raises my energy level better than sweets.

The large majority of people do not sufficiently "hydrate". I'm puzzled by this phenomenon. I think perhaps the most efficient way to consume water, if the supply is limited, is to consume it gradually. For most of our evoloutionary history, the supply of water was indeed, limited. Hence, we drink it slowly, not realizing, you see, in our primitive brain stems, that more is readily available. My father and I shared a large pizza at a restaurant a few days ago. I ate two thirds of it in the same time it took him to eat half as much. I drank FOUR GLASSES of water, he drank less than one. Strange. As I dieting tip, it's so obvious as to be under the radar, butit DOES help to bloat yourself with water. In North Africa in 1940-43, Montgomery's British soldiers, as well as Rommel's Afrika Corps, had FAR, FAR, less water available to them than we Americans in either of The Gulf Wars, still they survived and fought like Hell. The most amazing thing is that the Brits felt compelled to use a substantial portion of their meager daily allowance of water....to make bloody TEA....which is a diuretic!

I am a terrible sugar and carbohydrate addict- get that small rush which helps lift the depression for a little while. I also drink a large coffee daily - but only before 10am. Yesterday was my birthday, and I really went overboard on eating b-day cake today and yesterday. Today I feel just awful, kind of sickly from all that sugar. I never purge so it will take a long time to digest- straight to the hips and behind I am sure is where it will go! HA!

No question searchlight, it's been proven that depressed people tend to eat sugar, and do it in combination with caffeine. And to some extent, it works. But it's not exactly what we'd have hoped for, given all the heath, and weight issues.

So true Destroyo. I behave well sometimes and feel much the better for it, but chocolate and custard and caffine really do it for me, if only for a little while. I am about 25 pounds overweight. I can lose it, but at 38 it is much harder than it used to be (and the ADs don't help that part of it!). Wonder if I am hiding behind the weight because I just don't have the energy for another relationship after 2 divorces and umpteen relationships. Man I am pooped out! Sugar is my (old and) new beau!

Yep, I'm definitly one of the dehydrated ones. As crazy as it sounds, it's hard to drink a lot of water - especially at work with meetings. I feel like I'm always in the bathroom.

I didn't know that tea was a diuretic... Does green tea have the same effect?
