combining CBT with other therapies

Posted by philyra on June 28, 2007, at 19:58:09

i'd be really interested to hear from anyone who has combined CBT techniques with other interpersonal kinds of therapy. i've gone from using a deep kind of transpersonal model to CBT recently, and i really like how they are working well together. i know there are various CBT exercises out there, but i have a pretty limited range at the moment - just a worry/anxiety tracking sheet my T gave me. if anybody else has suggestions for exercises you do on your own esp. around anxiety & depression, i would really appreciate it. and if you have any thoughts on adapting CBT techniques to integral therapy or transpersonal therapy, i would really love to hear about it.

take care,
philyra

So far since my anxiety PHD and I started I kind of set my own goals and venture further each day to show myself that I can do it again. That the old me is still inside one breakthough happened last week I was so assertive on the phone with a store and solved the problem driving home in the rain. I could feel the old me is still there so it's positive. What is that other therphy you speak of not familiar with that? Love Phillipa

the therapy i had before is the integral counseling model, which incorporates eastern spiritual approaches to wellbeing with western approaches to psychotherapy. one of the teachers of this practice is ken wilbur. as a client of this practice i actually have a difficult time describing it, but i think one thing is that it helped me heal from my major depression episode by paying attention to mind, body, and spirit - so, one big thing i learned was to pay close attention to where feelings come up in my body and how to tolerate them instead of self-destructing because of them, how to let them move through my body and my spirit/mind. this was huge for me because i had always used dissociation to deal with difficult feelings, which was very painful for me. i also did a lot of energy work with my T that incorporated some approaches that verged on the psychic realm and were very meaningful and powerful...i mean, even if you're skeptical about that stuff, which i am to a certain extent, it was still very helpful to explore the feelings that came up in those sessions.

CBT is interesting to me bcs it seems so rational and mind-centered in comparison. i like noticing how it complements the other things i learned - i don't think i would get as much out of CBT if i hadn't done all this other work with my body and my feelings.

that's great about your breakthrough! i have a hard time being assertive with people on the phone too. i tend to just blame myself for problems.

take care,

It's a bit of a leap from transpersonal psych to CBT, though the idea of radical acceptance fits comfortably with both.
In the following book there is (if I have the right book) a section on how to turn the experience of depersonalisation to a spiritual end.
There is also info on the treatment of it over time, which is good for a laugh, like amphetamine+ECT.
More recent treatments are not inspiring either, though not so gruesome.
I have only skimmed a little of the book.

I'm completely ignorant of CBT, save what I have learned on Psychobabble, but that doesn't stop me having a great resistance to it.

The idea of radical acceptance is cool though.

Generally I think poets are better at depersonalisation.
Forgive me if you know this.

HYSTERIA

by: T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)

As she laughed I was aware of becoming involved in her laughter and being part of it, until her teeth were only accidental stars with a talent for squad-drill. I was drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns of her throat, bruised by the ripple of unseen muscles. An elderly waiter with trembling hands was hurriedly spreading a pink and white checked cloth over the rusty green iron table, saying: "If the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden, if the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden ..." I decided that if the shaking of her breasts could be stopped, some of the fragments of the afternoon might be collected, and I concentrated my attention with careful subtlety to this end.

i had a great resistance to it at first, too. but i've come to really like it a lot. maybe because i had other kinds of therapy before, so it fits me better?

thanks for the book rec., and the eliot poem. i agree about poets... :)
