Why do I have a BPD?

Posted by Deneb on June 2, 2005, at 22:00:31

My family doctor asked me if I had been abused...I said no. Then she asked me if I was jealous of someone, again I said no. I asked if there was some kind of "inbalance" in my brain, she said no. I asked if it is because my parents didn't bring me up right, she said no. She explained to me that lots of people have very tramatic childhoods and grow up ok. I don't think there was anything that horrible in my childhood, nothing as bad as I've heard in other families.

So, I'm very confused...if it's not biology or parenting...what exactly is it? Why am I so screwed up? Any opinions/explainations?

Linehan's thought is that it is a (unfortunate) combination of factors.

-Predisposition to intense emotions
-Difficulty returning to emotional baseline (in regulating intense emotional states)
-Environmental factors mean that the subject doesn't learn how to regulate their emotional states

Thats part of it... I think there is more. Maybe do a search on Marsha Linehan and see what you can find or try and get hold of her book...

I think I'd do a lot of reading on the web to see if this diagnosis actually fits you. What makes her think you're BPD? What criteria fits you? Some doctors have admitted this is an unfortunate catch all for some female patients. If I got that diagnosis, and I didn't think it fit, I'd go to someone else. If you do think it fits, then stay and work with her if you like her and trust her, but have her give you a better understanding of why, and what you can accomplish in therapy, esp. what she can do, and how she can help you, and how she sees your prognosis.

I'm almost 100% sure I have a BPD. It may be a milder case. I exhibit almost all the thought patterns and behaviours that go along with this dx. My p-doc told me about my dx after I'd been seeing her for about 2 yrs. I really like my p-doc...she is a rock for me, but I don't know if her approach is working with me. I cannot see her anymore after I stop being a student. I think I may grow out of it (BPD). My prognosis is good because I don't have a substance abuse problem.
