Second Job Interview

Posted by Poet on August 29, 2006, at 9:34:37

I've got a second interview on Friday. I'm scared in the good way though I took a Clonazepam after she called me.

I never get second interviews. I'm shocked.

Hi Phillipa,

I'm attempting a third career change- I'm taking paralegal classes and this job would be legal assistant at a law firm. I know I'd be good at it. Wow, was that more self confidence? Yikes.

I just got the phone call. Oh, you can all lie and say it's nothing I said. Nothing I did. That they found someone with more experience. More skills.

What it boils down to is that I am a loser. I am a complete and utter failure and somebody get it through my stupid head that it is time to give up. Accept that my destiny is to work at low paying mindless jobs until the day I am lucky enough to die.

Stop taking classes. Stop therapy. Stop meds. Accept myself for the loser I am. You can't fix something that's permanently defective.

Poet you had one interview planned. These things happen all over. Now find a head hunter and let them schedule the interviews. That's what my Daughter did and she's a paralegal. Love Phillipa

Well, that's one way to make sure you never have to revisit your self-concept. Don't try, that way you can't ever say you won.

But Poet? I don't think you're defective. You can tell me that it's only because I'm so screwed up that I can't even see your essential loserness, but do you really think that's true? Do you really think so little of me?

I know you don't. I also know that the Poet I heard with so much excitement the other day is part of the real Poet. So, of course -- and how I wish this wasn't true! -- is the Poet you're showing right now. I hope you can hold on to the knowledge that both parts of you are real, and keep hoping, keep trying.

Maybe you haven't bought the winning Career Lotto ticket yet, but that's not the same as being a loser. And I have a huge amount of affection for you, no matter what you do for a paycheck.

Unless you go to work for the Republican party.

xoxo

Look, I thought it was already established that **I** am the Grand Pubah of Failurism. Job's already taken, and I ain't giving it up! Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to. One of the requirements.

Guess you'll have to look for a job that requires a measure of success.

You know, you cant cant cant let other people, esp. people hiring for a job, even a great job--

you just CANT let those people define who you are.

who knows what's going on in their minds?????

I'm serious. I know a lot of people who go on auditions, after auditions, and get rejected a lot-- people with great talent, potential, and futures--

and I can absolutely assure you that in many, if not all, instances it is only partially related --sometimes not at all-- and certainly not at all in the sense that these hiring people are very fallible, and are guessing, and groping-- but at best only partly to do with who you are/ how great you would, in fact, be--

And much more to do with a million and one things that you can't imagine, that are individual, going on in the heads of the choosers/hirers/casting people/choreographers.

It's not the best dancer-- often it;s much less than the best-- it's the one who happens to fit with a conception, a particular slant, a preference, a moment that the person happened to look one way, and not another, in a room of dancers-- that could easily have happened another way on another day--

I know it doesn't feel like that-- it's really hard to learn how to try out-- or interview-- and crushing not to get that job, especially when they liked you.

I won't deny that the other person might have been good, too--,

But I absolutely refuse to contemplate the idea that you weren't/wouldn't have been a great hire for that job.

Period. (And I know this is easy to say, not live through- but this is still so true.)

I absolutely agree with this. I think Poet would be an asset to many organizations. But only organizations that can appreciate smart, funny, educated, informed, opinioned, and insightful women. Those that only want to hire the latest off the corporate cookie cutter, of course, shouldn't even bother to apply for the priviledge of hiring her.

And FineLineBob had a good point, too: Poet will need a job that requires a certain measure of successfullness. Then she'll get it.

After all, her gecko likes her. And at least one of her cats...

Oh, yeah -- and I like her, which makes her one of about four people on this planet who can say that...

Hi Phillipa,

I wish this was an isolated incident. This is not an isolated incident. A few months ago I got a call on the day of an interview that they hired someone else. I've been told I'm the number one candidate and I never hear back.

I am trying to tell myself it's because I don't have legal experience. Someone who did got the job, which is why I didn't, but this law firm called me. They saw my resume online and asked to interview me. Monday they called and scheduled the second interview. Thursday they rejected me.

I have two headhunters, that haven't gotten me any interviews. I try to convince myself that it's because I lack legal experience, but something tells me that paralegals with no legal experience of any type are a useless commodity.

Damn it I'm crying again at hell job.

Hi Racer,

I doubt the Republican Party would hire me, either, so no worries there. Though hell job is for Corporate America and I am the only democrat in my office... Reason 1,000 I can't take it anymore.

Thank you for believing that I am not defective and for seeing qualities in me that don't include being a loser.

I still feel like Queen of the Employment Losers. I know that my job is not a reflection of what I really am or what I really can do. I just would like to not be ashamed to tell people what I do. Because when I tell them, I get a look of surprise like *wow, I'd think you could do way better than that.*

I wish the employment world was filled with people like you (and many other babblers) because then my brain, my skills and my sense of humor would be appreciated and recognized.

Hi Curt,

I wish I could believe like you do that the right one always comes around. I wish someone could get fate to stop sparing me from the wrong job and get get me the right job.

I probably wouldn't have wanted to work for anyone who treats people like I got treated anyway. They are turkeys. Though it would have been decent pay and not mindless...damn, there I go again.

Hi Jost,

> But I absolutely refuse to contemplate the idea that you weren't/wouldn't have been a great hire for that job.

Period. (And I know this is easy to say, not live through- but this is still so true.)

It is hard to live through. I can't take much more rejection. My T says I personalize it, which I agree with, but I don't see how I can't personalize it. I've been rejected so many times for jobs that I am qualified for. I've been told I'm the number one candidate and I never hear back from them. My calls and emails don't get returned. The usual ignore her and she'll go away treatment.

You are absolutely right that they did make a mistake. Because I would have been good at that job and assuming I finish my classes they could have kept me on to be great at a better job. Yes, it's their loss, but this has happened to me so many times before. Not getting called and told not to come in for a second interview, but interviewing and being told I'm a strong candidate or even the number one candidate and never hearing back.

Thank you for your words of encouragement and understanding of the pain of this whole ordeal.

Have you thought about going to law school? You can be very pursuasive. I can see you as a defense attorney. Also perhaps you'd be in need of a good paralegal...

Poet, I was wondering what type of job your looking for, and what you think gets in the way of your getting hired.

It's really a practical problem, at one level.

If you can identify some reasons, realistically, then it might be possible to take them one by one, and start to remedy or work on the areas where you might be less effective or convincing to employers.

Maybe you need to research law firms (is this a job as a paralegal-- I'm not quite clear?) to find one that might be a good environment for you.

Or look into what qualifications are most desirable. etc.

I'd be interested in knowing exactly what job(s) you'd like to have, and then possibly thinking through how you might go about troubleshooting so that you would actually get one.

From what I've seen, there'a skill to getting a job, apart from the skills that the job requires once you have it.

The problem, whatever it is, has a solution, I'm sure, even if not an easily-arrived-at one.

Poet were you in the waiting room when other candidates were waiting to interview? If so was there anything that stood out. Briefcase, suit, etc. Oh I always found a thank-you card for the interview was useful and if another came up or the initial person they hired didn't work out they would maybe call you? And I wonder is they accepted a low salary? That would definitely play a role in it. Love Phillipa

And Poet, being the "Queen of Employment Losers", you are still my vassal. So pay up with the tithes so I can wallow in pitifully sumptuous comfort, or go out and be successful.

I'm sure you know enough people successful in employment to know that they are two different matters. ;)
