Replacement for SSRI?..Inositol?

Posted by no_rose_garden on July 25, 2008, at 23:34:40

I recently went off Celexa and my I'm feeling really bad again like I used to...I might have to end up going back onto my meds, but was wondering if there was something else that could help....
I've heard some things about Inositol...but dont' know much.
Thanks.

There were several double-blind studies done in the late 1990s suggesting inositol to be effective for panic, anxiety, and OCD. The dosage level in most of the studies was 12 to 18 grams. You can read about the studies at this link:

http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent.aspx?token=e0498803-7f62-4563-8d47-5fe33da65dd4&chunkiid=21766

It's at the iHerb health encyclopedia.

I have pretty bad GAD. I tried the inositol thing for a month a few years back and didn't notice anything. But according to the literature, there are no ill effects of taking such a high dosage, so it's definitely worth a try. I'd use it if it worked for me.

There haven't been enough studies done with regard to Inositol to prove any effectivness for treating panic/anxiety in my opinion. I tested Inositol at these high doses using a good quality powered form for at least three months and it had zero effect for me.

I believe the stereo isomer form I think it's called epi-inositol has shown to have a more potent effect as an anxiolytic, the problem with this is again a small amount of studies and the fact that you won't find a supplier of this form of Inositol.

It's inexpensive to try Inositol, there's various sites that sell the powder in bulk. Bulknutrition.com (ships internationally) or myprotein.co.uk for example.

Tryptophan, 5HTP or Seroctin?

hmmm...the seroctin looks interesting. The others seem to be sleep aids, and i don't need any less energy than i have right now...but i guess the depression has much to do with that.

But a website endorsing seroctin calls SSRI drugs that make people want to shoot everybody...it think it 's more that people who have problems are more likely to take ssri's.

I think maybe i'll talk to my counselor about seroctin next week...althought i'm alsmost certain he won't k now anything.

In the serotonin department, natural things to try include:

Kira brand St Johns Wort (same one as clinical studies in Germany, available online or at RiteAid and other places)

5htp starting with custom size doses of 10mg and working up as desired. Many naturopaths suggest up to 300mg a day, which in mind is insane. 50mg is a medidum dose and 100mg is a high dose as far as I am concerned.

Inositol has less evidence but is worth a try. It takes high doses.

Another natural one is Rhodiola Rosea, which to some people is better and faster than meds.

The one with the most evidence is St Johns Wort. If interested in learning more about it, go to sjwinfo.org which is a forum focusing on SJW.

I took/take inositol and it works very well for me for depression and anxiety. It calms and quiets my mind and takes away all my depression...BUT

it makes me very very tired and takes a way all my physical endurance, and zaps all my sexual urges to nil...basically I become very lazy physically but I do still have mental energy to read/study etc.

I tired augmenting inositiol with all kinds of stimulating things, but the tiredness always was there behind the stimulation...if you know what I mean.

so It is great for relief, but I dont think it is the answer for me

Well...in a normative sense to balance out/increase serotonin : 5HTP or L-Tryptophan, Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, B-6 and B-12 would all be needed.

However, I know people convert at different rates and such, but that doesn't take away the fact you should make sure to get sufficient amounts of such.

You could even add in ALCAR or a choline source such as Lecithin to the Inositol. That should definitely augments the effects of Inositiol.

How much Inositol you taking?

This is hardly ever mentioned, but you have to be very careful with St. Johns Wort. It's mechanism of action is similar to MAOI inhibitors (e.g., Nardil), and the same dietary and drug interaction restrictions must be followed when taking St. Johns Wort as if you were taking an MAOI inhibitor.

Ive took st johns wort and ate everything under the sun with no problems.

I also got great effects that felt similar but different to the SSRI feeling.

It's main mechanism of action is a serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, and gaba re-uptake inhibitor (amongst other mechanisms) according to scientific studies

It does have MAOI properties but only in very high (above normally clinically used) doses.

Read here for the true methods of action of SJW.
(Gaba is highlighted)

Recently, I tried Inositol for sleep and it worked decently, not great. But it had a great effect on my mood and my withdrawal symptoms from tapering my meds were minimal as a result.

Unfortunately, because it caused right ear blockage, I couldn't stay on it.

Just thought I would share my experience.
