Too much deep sleep - cause depression, brain fog?

Posted by Jimmyboy on July 6, 2008, at 15:55:45

I have noticed that on weekends when I sleep especially hard and for a long time, I wake up foggy headed and have more anxiety..

I have heard alot about getting too little deep "Delta" sleep , but not heard if its possible to get too much deep DElta phase sleep.. causing brain fog/depression/anxiety?

I have always been this way too. I have no idea about the amount of Delta-wave sleep and how it relates to this, but i feel pretty certain that a major factor is the act of sleeping in late (past when the more-or-less normal wake-up time is). I've noticed also that (if i'm not already sleep deprived) if/when i wake up earlier, i'll actually feel better and have more energy. And further i've found that if/when i've gone to sleep early and still slept a long time, but didn't sleep in very late, i won't wake up with that super-lethargic feeling like i do when i sleep in really late.
I do not know the underlying reasons for all this, other than that the simple obvious fact that it affects our circadian rhythms in one way or another.

i have always thought it best to get right up

but when the depression wins over the anxiety in the morning and i lay about, every moment makes it harder to get up

the last few sleep cycles do no include any delta stage so I think there is no deep rest experienced when you sleep in

here is a basic explanation of the sleep cycles

Last part of sleep has REM, which many depressed people have too much of and most effective antidepressants suppress. Also there are some studies showing that people who sleep 7 hours a night are healthier than those who sleep more.

in some tribal societies a fire is kept up all night as the expectation is for waking periods during the night (not considered sleep disturbances)

i expect to wake during the night

i also expect to wake early in the morning
i am weaning myself off a number of meds in an attempt to return to early waking
