I'm Full Of It! :[ Anything besides Mag help?

Posted by corafree on June 12, 2006, at 21:39:32

I have IBS, lactose intolerance, and pending rectocele and rectal prolapse surgery.

I am pretty severely depressed and have only been treated monotherapeutically. I feel I need to try a combo and everything suggested is appetite stimulating.

I'm going to d.c. desipramine as it's creating an insatiable appetite. I'm distended, so uncomfortable all the time, and literally 'full of it'! (Yep, in more ways than one; I know.) I'm on a very low dose too, but guessing it's prob' built up in my bloodstream. Believe I've been on 2-3mos.

I guess all TCAs have high probability of this sort of side effect.

Also had thought Effexor-XR w/ the TCA or w/ Remeron (also appetite stimulating).

I've been drinking 'at least' three bottles of drinking water a day and taking 600 mg magnesium w/ silica at h.s., and it had been very helpful for quite a while. Seems to have stopped working. I've wondered if taking 1200mg mag w/ silica a day would be harmful.

Are there any weapons out there anyone might suggest?

thanks, cf

I believe you have to balance magnesium with calcium (ratio 1:2 mg/ca). Please be aware that magnesium can worsen your depression.
IBS can be treated with paleolithic diet (caveman diet)
Your depression can be treated with st john wort or seroctin.

I've been 'really deeply depressed'. I have even gone so far as to go the Effexor-XR route again.

I have pretty much survived on water, juice, yogurt, and cereal w/ soy milk. And just taking multi-vite, as I took a double dose mag and had no results. Startin' feel a bit better physically but am NOT takin' my Effexor-XR today. I've always had different responses to it at different times in my life. This time, not good.

I'll print and keep your post.

Please be aware that 1200 mg Magnesium can worsen your depression.

Considering your condition you should rather try to take a brake from magnesium to see if it will alleviate your depression. I seriously doubt 1200 mg Magnesium will improve your depression.

Nothing has HELPED my depression as much as magnesium. I've been off meds for several years now since supplementing.

I agree though that 1200 mg is a pretty high dose, although when I first started supplementing I was so overloaded with calcium from my diet that I had to take 800 mg to 1,000 mg of magnesium a day for months before I felt more balanced. Now I take about 500 to 600 mg/day and no calcium.

Still Literally Full Of Sh*t :[ (Mag effects)

What works for one doesn't for another! What else is new.

When first started magnesium for help w/ anxiety, it worked wonders re: plumbing problems! I think I also felt better emotionally.

The benefits, though, soon leveled out, and off.

I didn't know what to do then, so I have stopped taking it.

I didn't know mag might increase depression?!

I wasn't taking calcium with it; the 2:1 calcium to mag ratio, mentioned above. Maybe this is why the mag fizzled out.

Just prescribed Miralax (It is a prescription laxative powder you mix w/ water that is tasteless, so real easy to take at bedtime.) and it's pretty good stuff.

Depression seems to be a side effect of 'too many' scrips and OTC treatments. (sigh)

tks, cf

I agree... we are all individuals :-)

Magnesium should be considered as an antagonist to Calcium. Thats why they should be supplemented together for neutral effect.

Magnesium has an inhibitory effect and Calcium has an excitatory effect on the brain. Magnesium blocks the release of any neurotransmitter, Calcium will increase the release of any neurotransmitter.

You will be more sensitive to Magnesium if you have low blood pressure since magnesium causes vasodilatation.

Some of the early signs of magnesium toxicity are
dry skin, low stomach acid, low blood pressure,
depression, fatigue, and diarrhea.

I've been careful to be aware of the 2:1 cal/mag ratio. I believe this is correct.

Mag is really helpful w/ anxiety, so when I first tried it, I dove head first w/o much caution as felt immediate relief.

Since then have paid more attn to balancing.

I've been predisposed to introspection and forward-spection(?) for a bit now and haven't watched my diet well ... but do love this 'alternative' board.
