Hemi-sync (hemisync?)

Posted by honeybee on June 14, 2006, at 14:54:41

Has anyone tried this out? My therapist gave me a couple of cds to try and, it's funny, the grinding, insoluble brain cramp seems to dissipate (not completely! but some) when I listen to it. Supposedly, it works on this principle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainwave_synchronization

Granted, the music is rather horrific and it's not what I'd like to be listening to all day, but somehow, it seems to be doing something. Anyone try it? Is it a load of bunk? Am I just manufacturing a truckfull of placebo (in which case: yahoo! cheap and easy!). I'm rather skeptical that anyone has tried it, but I thought I'd ask.

I have tried brainwave entrainment, it seems to have some value depending on what you want out of it. There are studies which seem to indicate that it works. However I have no idea whether the actual holosync implementation works.

I suggest trying other similar methods like the free bwgen (brainwave generator).

http://www.bwgen.com/

Or the commercial Neuro-Programmer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainwave_entrainment

"Although some studies have shown that these frequencies do provide help in treating certain medical conditions, there is not a wide acceptance by the medical community to adopt the practice of brainwave synchronization for emotional/mental disorders. The fixed, constant frequency of the synchronization is less helpful than techniques such as classical neurofeedback or learning meditation, which naturally generate brain wave frequencies that differ from person to person and may vary from minute to minute."

Nolvas,

How do you actually use it? (Or have you just tried it and decided that it's not to you?) If you decided not to use it, I'm curious if you've tried any of the other techniques that supposedly work for the same end (synchronization of brain waves). I'm thinking of neurofeedback and the like.

Thanks!

I use Neuro Programmer, I don't have version 2. I tried the demo but I'm sticking with version 1. I have used bwgen as well which is good if you want a free method.

I generally just use it for getting to sleep sometimes. I don't find it of much use if you are unduly worried and can't sleep. Then the mind just seems to override everything. You have to experiment a bit and find something you like the sound of with the type of brain wave state you are trying to induce. Some of them sound like torture techniques rather than relax you hehe.

I plan to experiment with it for longer to try and help with anxiety.

I go to sleep with this cheesy CD called "Delta Waves" almost every night. It knocks me right out, usually.

The guy who does it, Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, has a website with more info about treating things with sound http://neuroacoustic.com/.

Do you use Neuro Programmer for anything else? I'll have to check it out.

Thanks, Nolvas.

I actually have some Dr Jeffrey Thompson CDs (isn't ebay wonderful? heh) he has researched and uses brainwave entrainment.

Neuro Programmer is good I like it. Try a demo and see what you think. Version 2 is more complex than the older version I have, however the version I have is quite comprehensive. You can use it for a variety of things, like anxiety, insomnia, relaxation, improving cognition and memory. Recording your own suggestions.

If you want to experiment for free then use bwgen it's much the same thing just less polished, and there's plenty of free user created resources for it.

Well it seems bwgen isn't free anymore, or maybe it never was. Sorry for that misinformation! I d/loaded it today and found it has a 30 day trial. Well you can try it for 30 days and if you find it useful then it is a less expensive than neuro-programmer to purchase.
