(Personally, I would feel "ganged up on" and a bit intimidated with two shrinks. Perhaps that was their plan?)

Hi TinMan :) Could you please tell me what DHEA is, and is it a prescription drug? I need help! Going to pick up some Ginko today!

DHEA is an over the counter supplement. You can get it at most major pharmacies and stores in the U.S. Presently, I am taking 50 mg a day. It really does help a lot with the energy and vitality. The human body slows down in its production of DHEA as we get older. Adding it back into your diet puts more back into your system. It is a form of testosterone. I am female. (Not really TinMAN, but TinWOMAN.) There is no unwanted facial hair growth or anything like that!!

TinMan, I am interested in your posting on DHEA...everything I read about it states that large amounts i.e. 50mg is dangerous and causes many side effects. The stated amount recommended is 5 mg. per day. I am an advocate of "whatever works" so I'm interested in knowing how you arrived at the 50 mg. figure...do you go by weight or tolerance? I am taking Effexor XR 75 mg. every morning down from 150 mg. a day. Most days are good...I continue to clinch and grit my teeth which I assume will always be a nuisance. Other than that I feel pretty good most days...
Anyway, I'm very interested in DHEA...what it does for you and how you determine amount..thanks

That's a relief -- I'm already plucking things that shouldn't be there -- Sometimes I wonder if I should just let them grow, curl them, and style them into my regular do! So the last thing I'd need is to encourage anymore facial anomolies.

Now to get my boyfriend to try them, too. (He is also on AD's as well as a high-BP med.) It does require both of us to do this!!!! (blush)

I did some more research on DHEA after reading your post. Are you, by chance, in the U.K.? Apparently, DHEA is hard to find in Europe BUT 5 mg. tablets are prescribed to women going through menopause.

The two studies that I read were done with women and men using 50-100 mgs. of DHEA. The listed benefits were more vitality, obesity control, cancer prevention, plus others.

I went to another website where a Dr. insisted that on 25 mg of DHEA, he had heart palpitations and called higher doses "dangerous". Scrolling down, he had his own, Dr. approved 5 mg. supplements for sale (!!).

It is a precursor to the sex steroid hormones testosterone and estrogen. Our bodies slowly stop producing DHEA as we get older, diminishing up to 90% as we age.

There really was no rhyme or reason for taking 50 mg. Those were the tablets I found at the store. I have taken 25 mg. daily in the past without side effects. And now I know that this is one of those things that "more is not necessarily better".

If you are interested in taking DHEA, consult with your Dr. first. Investigate it to see if it is something you want to add. <<<(This is my disclaimer. No lawsuits, please!! But if you must, I can be served papers in the Land of Oz. And I will send the flying monkeys. Hehehehe...)

> Nope, not in the UK...actually in the wonderful state of Louisiana...I've just read quite a bit about the DHEA and yes, I read about the doc who has it for sale. I wonder why the docs in the UK have found DHEA to be helpful and those in US don't seem to know that much about it (or say they don't)...I'm a fairly small person so the 5 mg. seems to be what I would need to start...maybe I could break them into small pieces...thanks so much for your info..

TinMan,
Hi, I just happened upon this website while I was looking up information on possible long-term effects of effexor xr. I was prescribed effexor xr today by my doctor for dysthimia so I haven't even begin to take it yet and have no idea what any possible side effects I might have. My question for you is if it is common for there to be adverse sexual side effects? I have little to no sexual desire as it is and am concerned that effexor may make my situation even worse. Any input?

I took Effexor for 2 years and am in the middle of trying to go off of it. (go to "withdrawals" psycho babble site for more info). I'd suggest you research alternatives to Effexor XR. Yes, it helped me with depression/anxiety. BUT, going off of it is terrible---it is a MAJOR drug that your body gets addicted to. If you read the "withdrawals" threads, you will understand. Honestly, unless you are suicidal, I would look into the many alternative/natural remedies on this site--like ST. John's Wort, 5-HTP, etc. At least if they don't work and you go to get off of them, you will not SUFFER as people do getting off Effexor.

SExually, it will definitely diminish your desire. So, again, look into other alternatives, that's my 2 cents!

Good luck,
Liz
